UP Yoddhas have retained 11 players ahead of the PKL 12 auction.

The 11th edition of the Pro Kabaddi League was a successful campaign for UP Yoddhas, as they reached the semifinals. They had a well-balanced team last season, led by raiders Bhavani Rajput and Gagan Gowda, along with defenders Hitesh and Sumit Sangwan. Unlike teams that relied heavily on individual brilliance, UP’s strength lay in teamwork, with all players contributing to the team’s success.

Their season ended on a disappointing note as they lost in the semi-final in a close encounter against defending champions Haryana Steelers. Still, the team left a strong impression, particularly in defence. Hitesh (74 tackle points in 23 matches) and Sumit (72 tackle points in 23 matches) were both among the top 10 defenders last season.

UP have announced the retention list ahead of the auction. They retained their core team for the upcoming season. Key players like Bhavani Rajput, Gagan Gowda, Hitesh, and Sumit Sangwan remain with the team, giving UP a balanced squad even before the auction begins.

They have also retained their right-cover defender Ashu Singh. With 11 players retained, UP’s auction will not be as hectic as other teams. UP would look to buy some new emerging domestic talents and foreign players to strengthen their squad.

Key areas to strengthen

While the team looks strong overall, there are a couple of areas where UP could look to strengthen. The left cover position was a weak spot last season. Mahinder, who played in that position, managed only 29 tackle points in 21 matches.

With Bhavani and Gagan leading the raiding department, adding a quality all-rounder who can play as the third raider and also contribute to defence will provide flexibility for UP in the league stages. Surinder Gill’s form is also a matter of concern, and hence UP is in dire need of getting an all-rounder for the upcoming season.

Players to target

UP Yoddhas can look to strengthen their squad for PKL 12 with a few additions. In the raiding department, they can target Sachin Tanwar. Although he didn’t have a great season last year, he could be a valuable asset as a third raider, providing depth and experience.

Another potential target for them could be Vinay Virender, who impressed in a few matches last season. However, as the third raider, he can prove to be a great addition to the team. In defence, UP could target Parvesh Bhainswal for the left cover position. While his recent form has been inconsistent, his experience and past performances could make UP a strong defensive team.

As for all-rounders, Vijay Malik would be an ideal pick. However, budget constraints might make buying him difficult. The other option could be Ashish, who played for Dabang Delhi last season and could provide balance to the squad.

Conclusion

UP Yoddhas already have a stable squad before the auction. With most of their key players retained and only a few areas to improve, they are one of the few teams that won’t have to do much in the auction. If they fix a few minor issues, especially adding a left cover and a good all-rounder, they could be strong contenders for the title this season.
