The 2015 champions had a disappointing run this year.
The eighth season of the Pro Kabaddi League saw U Mumba coming up with a disappointing performance. Everyone had high expectations from U Mumba, who won the title in the second season of the league, but their performances couldn’t live up to their name. The team won only seven out of 22 matches in the last season and lost 10. The team finished 10th in the points table with five tied matches, which speaks of their inconsistency.
U Mumba made numerous mistakes in Pro Kabaddi League Season 8, which cost them many matches. The team lagged behind in both raiding and defence. They even failed to reach the playoffs and were in the bottom half of the points table after the league stages.
What went wrong for the team?
U Mumba started the eighth season of the Pro Kabaddi League on a grand note. Even though the former champions were not able to win many matches, they were definitely being a big obstacle in the way of big teams to the title. However, the team's performance in the last 10 matches was very poor. U Mumba lost seven out of those matches and went out of the race for the playoffs.
The biggest negative point for U Mumba was that their team did not coordinate well together. If Abhishek Singh used to perform well in raiding then V Ajit Kumar failed to support him. On the other hand, if Kumar showed his best game in a match, then Singh used to be left behind. Apart from this, the team also made many mistakes in defence. Fazal Atrachali and Rahul Setpal failed to be the driving force of the defensive unit together. The team did not get success due to their lack of coordination.
Positives to take from the tournament
One of the biggest positive points for U Mumba was that they tied many of their matches in Pro Kabaddi League Season 8. This shows that their players have the strength to deal with tricky situations. With a little more effort, the team could win the title in the upcoming season. Apart from this, Abhishek Singh and V Ajit Kumar also impressed a lot with their performances.
Especially, Ajit's performances were commendable and fans saw a different kind of spark in him during the league. He can certainly become a successful raider in the times to come.
Which players performed well?
If any player performed better than expected for U Mumba in Pro Kabaddi League Season 8, it was V. Ajit Kumar. The former Tamil Thalaivas player scored a total of 159 points in 20 matches for his new team. He also scored six Super10s during the season. The raider was sensational in many matches in the absence of his teammate Abhishek Singh.
He proved to be a rising star of the league last season. At the same time, one cannot ignore the performances of Abhishek Singh as well. He was the fifth most successful raider in Pro Kabaddi League Season 8.
Disappointing performances
U Mumba fans were left disappointed with the performances of stheir captain and one of the most experienced players in the league, Fazal Atrachali. Atrachali's performances were clearly not up to the mark last season. He played a total of 22 matches in Pro Kabaddi League Season 8 and only scored 51 points.
At the same time, he could only manage to score two High5s. This shows how disastrous Fazal Atrachali’s form was. He could lead the team neither in defence nor in captaincy.
Changes for upcoming season
U Mumba will have to focus on their defence in the upcoming season of the league. Apart from Fazal Atralachali, two more such veteran defenders should be brought in the team, who can bring more points consistently. They should trust Abhishek Singh and V. Ajit Kumar in raiding. However, apart from them, the team can add another good raider to their roster. U-Mumba will have to focus on their defence the most at the moment.
