With each season, a few captains rise above the rest, racking up impressive wins and making their place in PKL history.

The 11th season of Pro Kabaddi League (PKL11) is all set to kick off on October 18th. As teams prepare for battle, all eyes are on the captains who will lead them in the hunt for glory. Captains in the Pro Kabaddi League do more than just strategize — they inspire their teams, lead from the front, and fight for every point.

Over the years, some captains have managed to rise above the rest, making a significant mark on the league. As PKL 11 approaches, let’s look at the top three most successful captains in PKL history.

Fazel Atrachali – 70 Wins

Fazel Atrachali, the Iranian kabaddi legend, holds the record for the most wins as captain in PKL history with 70 victories. Known for his incredible defending skills, Atrachali has racked up a staggering 486 tackle points over his PKL career.

He made his PKL debut in Season 2 and has since captained multiple teams, including U Mumba, Puneri Paltan, and Gujarat Giants. Last season, Fazel led the Gujarat Giants to a playoff finish, solidifying his reputation as the most successful captain in the league with 70 wins.

Ahead of PKL 11, Fazel Atrachali has been picked up by the Bengal Warriors for ₹50 lakh. With his outstanding leadership qualities and ability to stay calm under pressure, many expect him to continue his captaincy reign, although the team also has star raider Maninder Singh in their ranks.

Sunil Kumar – 65 Wins

Sunil Kumar is another standout defender who has made his mark in PKL history. With 65 wins as captain, Sunil has proven himself a formidable leader on the mat. He led the Jaipur Pink Panthers to their PKL title in Season 9, playing a pivotal role in their success by accumulating 82 tackle points throughout the season.

In the PKL 11 auctions, Sunil was one of the most sought-after players, with U Mumba securing his services for ₹1.015 crore. As one of the top right corner defenders in the game, his leadership and defensive skills make him a key asset to U Mumba, who may look to him as their new captain after releasing their former skipper, Surinder Singh.

Sunil’s calm, composed leadership style and sharp tactical approach have always stood out, and U Mumba will be hoping he can replicate the success he had with Jaipur Pink Panthers in PKL 11.

Anup Kumar – 52 Wins

Anup Kumar, a legendary figure in Indian kabaddi, was one of the league’s earliest stars. As captain of U Mumba, Anup led his team to the PKL finals in the first season and went on to clinch the trophy in Season 2. Known for his sharp tactical mind and cool demeanor on the mat, Anup was also named the Most Valuable Player of Season 1.

With 52 wins as captain, Anup Kumar stands third on the list of most successful PKL captains. He guided U Mumba to the finals in three consecutive seasons, but after Season 3, his form began to dip. He eventually moved to the Jaipur Pink Panthers, where he captained the team for a brief period before retiring midway through Season 6.

Anup’s legacy in the PKL extends beyond his playing days. After retirement, he transitioned to coaching and trained Puneri Paltan, where he had a significant impact on Fazel Atrachali, who would go on to break his record for the most wins as captain in PKL history.
