UPKL: Mirzapur and Brij Stars pulled off narrow wins
The league saw two nail-biting results on Thursday.
It has been a brilliant start to the inaugural season of the UP Kabaddi League (UPKL), with all the teams finding their footing as the campaign progresses. The level of competition has intensified after early exchanges between the sides who were still figuring out their strengths and weaknesses.
Four matches were played on Thursday, 18 July 2024 at the Noida Indoor Stadium in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Two of the four matches went down the wire, and the winner was separated from the loser by a single point. There is hardly any room for error in the 2024 UPKL, which makes things interesting.
Here is a brief look at the results and the players who impressed from the four matches of the 2024 UP Kabaddi League that took place on 18 July:
UPKL Match 29: Kashi Kings 42 – 22 Noida Ninjas
Kashi Kings recorded a convincing win over the Noida Ninjas on Thursday. They secured a win courtesy of a 42 – 22 scoreline. Uday Dabad collected 10 points for the Kings while Arjun Sirohi emerged as the top performer for the Ninjas with five points.
Kashi Kings won their third game in a row and look to have found a rich vein of form. With 22 tackle points, it was their defensive performance which earned them the win.
UPKL Match 30: Yamuna Yodhas 31 – 34 Lucknow Lions
Lucknow Lions maintained their perfect start to the 2024 UP Kabaddi League with yet another win. This time, they beat the Yamuna Yodhas by a 34 – 31 scoreline. Vinay scored nine points in a fabulous performance while raiding for the Yodhas. On the other hand, Arjun Deshwal outshined the rest with a 13-point haul.
Thanks to the win, Lucknow Lions sit comfortably at the top of the league table after winning their eighth game in a row. They are the only undefeated team in the competition.
UPKL Match 31: Sangam Challengers 37 – 36 Ganga Kings of Mirzapur
Sangam Challengers and Ganga Kings of Mirzapur played an entertaining game which went down to the wire. In the end, the Challengers won the game by a 37 – 36 scoreline against the Kings of Mirzapur. Bhanu Pratap Tomor scored 14 points for the winning team while Anil Kumar scored 17 points in a losing cause.
It was a game that flew back and forth. In terms of raids, both the Sangam Challengers (28) and Ganga Kings of Mirzapur (29) did well but their tackle points tally, three and two respectively, left a lot to be desired.
UPKL Match 32: Awadh Ramdoots 35 – 36 Brij Stars
Awadh Ramdoots and Brij Stars also played a closely fought contest on Thursday, a game that was separated by only a single point which saw the latter win by a 36 – 35 scoreline. Abhishek Singh scored 10 points for Awadh Ramdoots whereas Vishal Chaudhary scored 13 points for the Brij Stars.
While the Awadh Ramdoots scored more raid points (21), the Brij Stars outperformed in defence, collecting 15 tackle points. It was only the third win in the campaign for the Stars which should improve the mood in the dressing room.
