The 20th edition of the Asian Games, Asian Games 2026 Aichi-Nagoya, will witness its Kabaddi event being played at the Tokai Citizens Gymnasium in Tokai, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, from 21st to 26th September 2026.
Throughout Kabaddi’s current international presence, the Indian team has showcased undeniable superiority. A team that has amassed eight consecutive gold medals in the history of the Asian Games and has dominated every edition save 2018, the giants of the subcontinent will be hoping to add another feather to their crown.
India has been seeded into Group A alongside four powerhouses of Asian kabaddi. Each game in the group stage will be crucial for them, and under the tactical acumen of veteran coach Balwan Singh and his deputy, BC Ramesh, it will be interesting to see how Sunil Kumar and his company build up the tension on the mat against their opposition.
Who will India face in the opening match of Asian Games 2026?
The defending champions are all set to take on the hosts, Japan, in their opening fixture of the Asian Games 2026 campaign.
The match will be held at the Tokai Citizens Gymnasium in Tokai, Aichi Prefecture, on 21st September, 2026. On September 22, 23, and 24, respectively, India will play the Republic of Korea, Bangladesh, and Chinese Taipei in their last three group stage games.
Japan’s current form
The Japanese side has recovered significantly and can give India some real trouble if they don’t get hold of the mat early on in the game. After winning the East Asian Men’s Kabaddi Championship in 2025, with a thumping victory of 46-26 on the scorecard against Chinese Taipei in the final game, they will enter the tournament with commanding morale.
They defeated both Asian Games 2023 bronze medallists, Chinese Taipei and the Republic of Korea, in the championship last year. These triumphs over the regional heavyweight boosted their confidence in themselves ahead of their Asian Games 2026 campaign, while the developmental tours they had taken alongside intense training sessions have bolstered their team’s defensive cohesion as well as their raiding techniques.
Can Japan compete for the gold medal?
Even though they can emerge as the favourites on their home mat, it is safe to say that Japan may not be able to pose as a notable counterpart to the Indian team in their race to clinch the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026.
With a historic championship win last year and intense preparation for the 20th edition of Asia’s flagship sporting event, the hosts have significantly evolved into a strong contender for the bronze medal in Aichi.
