The fourth edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) kicked off with a grand opening ceremony at the Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati, Assam. The KIUG is a national level multi-sport event for university students, organized by the Indian government as part of its Khelo India initiative to promote sports and fitness among the youth.
For the first time, the KIUG is being hosted by the seven Northeastern Indian states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland and Tripura – in a bid to showcase the region’s rich cultural and sporting diversity.
The event will run till February 29, with medals up for grabs in 20 sports disciplines, including athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, fencing, football, hockey, judo, kabaddi, rugby, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, wrestling, and yogasana.
Around 4,500 athletes from over 200 Indian universities are expected to participate in the KIUG, which operates in a team championship format. The medals earned by individual athletes or teams contribute to the overall medal tally of their respective universities. The university with the highest count of gold medals at the end of the event will be declared the winner.
