The Khelo India Winter Games 2024 are underway in two phases, showcasing the best of winter sports in India. The event is part of the Khelo India programme, an initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports to foster sports culture and excellence in the country.
The first phase of the games is being held in Leh, Ladakh from February 2 to 6, where 344 athletes from 15 states, UTs and institutions are competing in ice hockey and speed skating. The venues are NDS Sports Stadium, Gupuks Pond and LSRC rink.
The second phase of the games will take place in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir from February 21 to 25, where 361 more athletes will vie for medals in ski mountaineering, alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing and gandola. The venues are Kangdoori Phase 1 and Golf Course Club.
This is the fourth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, which started in 2020 to promote winter sports in India. The previous three editions were hosted and won by Jammu and Kashmir, who are the defending champions with 26 gold, 25 silver and 25 bronze medals in 2023.
The games follow a team championship format, where the medals won by individual athletes or teams add up to the total medals tally of their state, UT or institution. The team with the most gold medals at the end of the event will be declared the winner.
