National Games 2023: Bhavani Devi defends gold in fencing women's sabre individual event

Babu Gaonkar won hosts Goa's first gold medal in the national games.
Olympian CA Bhavani Devi from Tamil Nadu continued her impressive performance in the Women's Sabre Individual Fencing event, while hosts Goa secured three medals in Modern Pentathlon at the National Games 2023 on Thursday.
Bhavani Devi, a prominent star at the Games' official opening, triumphed over Kerala's S Soumiya with a score of 15-5 in the final, securing consecutive National Games 2023 gold medals. In the same event, Shiksha Ballouria of Himachal Pradesh and Jagmeet Kaur of Punjab claimed bronze medals.
Earlier in the day, Babu Gaonkar earned the host state's first gold medal by winning the Men's Laser Run event in Modern Pentathlon in Ponda. Haryana's Ajay and Ravi secured silver and bronze, respectively. Later, Babu teamed up with Seeta Gosavi to win silver in the Laser Run mixed relay, while Anju and Ravi from Haryana clinched the gold, and Yoginee Salunke and Shahaji Sargar from Maharashtra secured bronze.
In the Women's Laser Run, Ujjala from Haryana secured the gold, followed by Yoginee Umakant Salunke from Maharashtra with silver and Neha Yadav from Madhya Pradesh with bronze. In the Men's Laser Run Team event, Haryana secured gold, Madhya Pradesh took silver, and Maharashtra received bronze. In the Women's Team event, Madhya Pradesh earned gold, while Maharashtra secured silver, and Goa won bronze.
At the Campal Sports Village, Popy Hazarika from Assam secured the gold in the Women's 59 Kg weightlifting category with a total lift of 191 Kg (Snatch – 86 Kg, Clean & Jerk – 105 Kg). Davinder Kaur from Punjab secured silver with a total lift of 182 Kg, and M. Deepanayomi from Andhra Pradesh lifted 180 Kg to win the bronze.
In the Men's 67 Kg category, Mizoram's Lalhunthara lifted a total of 281 Kg to secure the gold, narrowly surpassing Subhash Lahre from SSCB by just one kilogram. Arunachal Pradesh's Bengia Tani claimed bronze with a total lift of 277 Kg.
In the Women's 64 Kg category, Ditimoni Sonowal from Assam secured the gold with a total lift of 200 Kg, while S. Nirupama Devi from Manipur took home the silver (195 kg), and Jasveer Kaur from Punjab bagged the bronze (186 kg).
N. Ajith from Tamil Nadu claimed the gold medal in the 73 Kg Men's category with a total lift of 290 Kg. Ranjeet Chavan from Maharashtra secured the silver medal with a lift of 281 Kg, and J. Koteswara Rao from Andhra Pradesh won the bronze.
In Gymnastics at the Peddem Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Yogeshwar Singh from Haryana won gold in the All Round Individual Men's event, with Sidharth Verma from Uttar Pradesh and Gaurav Kumar from SSCB receiving silver and bronze, respectively.
Later in the day, Maharashtra added five more gold medals in gymnastics, securing victory in the Women's and Men's Pairs, Mixed Pair, and Women's Group in Acrobatic Gymnastics, as well as the Women's individual all-round event in rhythmic gymnastics. SSCB won another gold in the Men's Group.
Pranati Nayak, representing Odisha, secured the gold in the Women's All-Round Individual event, with Pranati Das from West Bengal winning silver and Shraddha Talekar from Maharashtra receiving bronze.
In Rugby, Odisha defeated Karnataka, and Bihar overcame Delhi in the quarterfinals of the Women's event, while West Bengal secured a place in the semis by beating Kerala. In the Men's category, Haryana bested Punjab, Odisha won against Bihar, Maharashtra defeated Goa, and West Bengal triumphed over Kerala to book their spots in the semi-finals.
At the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium in Navelim, Telangana faced Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi played against Chhattisgarh in the semi-finals of Women's Basketball 3x3. In the men's category, Madhya Pradesh squared off against Rajasthan, and Delhi faced Punjab for a place in the finals.
