Dempo SC set to start AWES CUP campaign against FC Goa
The tournament will be the season opener for Goan football.
Defending champions Dempo Sports Club will take on FC Goa Reserves in the opening match of the 2nd AWES (Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sportsperson) Cup which will commence from 28th August 2018 at Tilak Maidan, Vasco and the finals of the tournament will be played on 15thh September at the same venue.
AWES Secretary Jonathan De Sousa welcomed the media who were present for the press conference and said “We are back with the second edition and this time in Vasco at Tilak Maidan. This year we have three outstation teams and five local teams. All the matches will be played at 4:00 PM, except for the finals which is most likely to be played under the floodlights.”
Before the finals, there will be veterans match played between All India football legends which is being hosted by the Vendanta Goa who are also sponsors of the tournament.” He added.
AWES Cup 2018 Dempo fixtures
Along with Dempo and FC Goa, Indian Super League side FC Pune City and Salgaocar FC are placed in Group A, whereas, Group B consist of last time Runners Up Gokulam FC, Mumbai outfits ONGC FC, Goa Professional League Winners Sporting Clube de Goa and Sesa Football Academy.
The group B matches will start with Salgaocar taking on Pune City on 29th August, followed by Sporting taking od SESA FA and FC Goa clashing with Salgaocar on 30th and 31st August respectively. The group matches will conclude on 9th September with Dempo taking on ISL side Pune City. Whereas Semi-finals will be played on 11th and 12th September.

Last season, FC Pune City came with their reserve side but this time the ISL side will come with their first team and the organisers are happy to announce the same.

So, next season we are hopeful for more ISL and I-League teams.” De Sousa stated.
The tourney which replaced Goa Police Cup as a season opener last season will continue its status as the professional football season will resume in the football-loving state after a gap of almost three months with this tourney.
