Mohamed Ali and Lallianzuala Chhangte shine as Goa, Delhi draw
Written by: Uttiyo Sarkar
Some late magic from Chhangte earned a point for the Dynamos.
FC Goa's playoff dreams took a big blow as they were held by Delhi Dynamos to a 1-1 draw at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa on Wednesday. After an uninspired first half, both teams looked intent in the second half with Hugo Boumous' goal seeming like the winner before Kalu Uche equalized for the Lions in the 81st minutes to sink the Gaurs' hearts.
Watch: FC Goa 1-1 Delhi Dynamos FC highlights
Here is our look at how the Indian players performed on the day.
Naveen Kumar- 6.0
Naveen Kumar didn't really have that much to do against Delhi Dynamos because of their lack of real chances at goal, but he did well at asserting himself well in the game. Kumar made a few good saves in the match where he was mostly seen with his distribution, which was great. Kumar was unlucky to have conceded late in the game, with Uche's shot being too powerful to stop. His rotten luck of not getting a clean sheet continued in a game which looked like one at where he was going to get one due to the Dynamos lack of pressure inside his box.
Seriton Fernandes- 6.5
Seriton has been a really good full-back for Goa this season and continued his solid work at the back against the dangerous Lallianzuala Chhangte whom he contained well throughout most of the game. Seriton marked his man really well and contained his threat, neutralizing him from doing throughout the first half and during much of the 2nd period as well. He made a few crucial tackles and interceptions to bail out his side, but his lapse in judgment allowed Chhangte to run through and assist Uche for the equalizer, something which undid much of his top-notch work till that point.
Mohamed Ali- 7.5
Mohamed Ali had a tough task of containing the unpredictable attacking core of Delhi Dynamos and looked up to the challenge throughout most of the game. While he did show some inexperience in getting a bit overzealous and making rash challenges, one which earned him a yellow card, he was otherwise solid and made his presence felt. The young defender made 4 tackles on the day, along with 3 blocks as well to stop Uche and co from penetrating his defence. He was a bit unlucky to concede that goal towards the end as he was one of the best players on the pitch for Goa.
Narayan Das- 5.5
The Indian International had a day to forget as he found it really difficult to contain the pace and trickery of Romeo Fernandes on his wing. Narayan almost made a bad mistake in making a bad back-pass in the 1st half which was almost capitalized on by Dynamos and struggled even more in the 2nd period. Romeo went past him on multiple occasion and he couldn't really do anything to stop him. Some of his passes went astray as well and the defender looked under pressure throughout the game which made for a very mediocre performance.
Brandon Fernandes- 7.0
Watch: Brandon Fernades missed a chance against Delhi Dynamos
Brandon Fernandes has definitely been one of the finds of the season for FC Goa who have brought out the best of him in that attacking role this time. Fernandes always looks like a threat whenever he has the ball and was menacing for the Gaurs in the first half where he tried to create opportunities and break the deadlock himself. Fernandes had two shots which whiskered just past goal in the first period and also created a few great chances for his side. He was moved to the ring-wing later in the 2nd half which didn't really do him good, but his stellar performance proved how bright his future is.
Mandar Rao Dessai- 6.5
Watch: Mandar Rao Dessai missed a chance to score against Delhi Dynamos
Mandar Rao Dessai definitely showed sparks of danger for FC Goa in this match where he seemed pumped to be the difference but failed when he got chances to. While Dessai was absolutely terrific on the right-wing where he went past Dynamos defence and tried to create some opportunities for his team, but his end-result was a bit poor on the day. Dessai did have a shot on target well saved by the keeper and while he was terrific in terms of movement and skill on the day, he needs to improve his finishing to become an even better winger and be the difference for his side.
Manvir Singh- NA
Manvir was brought on with around 2 minutes remaining for Brandon Fernandes and didn't really get any time to do anything, only getting the touch of a ball a few times and failing to make his presence felt in the short time.
Mohammad Dhot- 6.5
Mohammad Dhot had to fill in the boots of Pritam Kotal against FC Goa, but he showed how good a defender he is by holding his ground and playing really well throughout the game. Dhot was doing really well in containing his man as a right-back in the first half before he had to move to the central position in the second half. He showed a lot of maturity for his age in holding his ground against one of ISL's most dangerous attacks and was awarded the "Emerging Player of the Match" award for his strong performance.
Rowlinson Rodrigues- 6.0
Rowlinson Rodrigues has proved to be a solid defender for Delhi Dynamos in the past few weeks and while he wasn't as effective on the day, he did rather well in containing FC Goa's threat in the first half. Rowlinson made 2 blocks as well as a crucial interception to stop the Gaurs from threatening in their box and did rather well to contain the threat of Ferran Corominas. But after conceding a rather unlucky goal, he was withdrawn by Miguel Portugal and also looked to have picked up a knock which could be a blow to the Dynamos.
Munmun Lugun- 5.5
Munmun Lugun has been a really good find for Delhi Dynamos at the back this season but he showed his inexperience on the day where he really struggled against the pacy Mandar Rao Dessai on his wing. Mandar went past him on multiple times and Lugun just wasn't looking to be able to stop him either and struggled to do anything about his darting runs forward. He recovered in the 2nd half when he was shifted to the ring-back role, where he made a few interceptions and somewhat avenged his bad first half showing but it was an overall disappointing showing for the Dynamos defender.
Vinit Rai- 6.0
Vinit Rai has been pretty good at sitting ahead of his defence and playing the role of an anchor-man for Delhi Dynamos this season, but he was under a bit of pressure against FC Goa who often looked to penetrate through the middle. Rai wasn't really helped by his midfielders who let Goa play through the middle and even the goal was one where Boumous was allowed to run through the middle. Rai was pretty decent otherwise as he made 5 tackles to win the ball for his team and had a decent game apart from a few lapses of concentration.
Romeo Fernandes- 6.5
Romeo Fernandes has definitely been one of the better players for Delhi Dynamos in their torrid season so far and he showed his ability with a return to his previous home in the ISL. Fernandes looked really quick throughout the game as he made some menacing runs through that right wing and delivered in some promising balls which weren't really capitalized on by anyone. He ran the Gaurs defenders ragged throughout the game and looked dangerous whenever he got the ball, making a decent impression before being substituted in the second half.
Lallianzuala Chhangte- 7.5
Lallianzuala Chhangte has had a really topsy-turvy season so far in the ISL, with him being terrific on some days and sour on some others, but thankfully for the Dynamos, he was more of the former against FC Goa. Chhangte looked quite menacing on that left-flank but was being contained well by Seriton in the first half, with the winger looking to help out his defence during most of the game.
His defensive stats were great as he made 5 tackles and two interceptions, proving how sound he is defensively. While he missed a glorious opportunity in the 2nd half, he made amends by making a clever run and assisting Kalu Uche to score the equalizer. Chhangte received the "Winning Pass of the Match" award for his smart assist which ended his day on a high.
Arnab Das Sharma- 7.0
Watch: Arnab Das Sharma made a stunning save to deny Corominas the winner
Not many fans even expected Arnab Das Sharma to be brought on after Xabier Iruetaguena had started in goal for the Lions, but Miguel Portugal made an intriguing change in getting Das Sharma in for Iruetaguena so that Jeroen Lumu could replace Rowlinson. This change actually turned out to be a brilliant one as Arnab was terrific in his short stint, making a few crucial clearances and looking confident.
But his moment of brilliance came late into the game when he magnificently saved Coro's shot which looked destined for goal and earned a point for his side, with his substitution proving to be a match-winning one for the Dynamos.
Seityasen Singh- 6.0
Seityasen Singh was brought on to add something different to Delhi Dynamos attack instead of Romeo Fernandes and while he didn't have any direct impact on the game's result, he did well at keeping the play going. Singh didn't really get the chance to do anything but showed good energy after coming on and made sure his side always tried to look for a winner.
