The Barcelona defender had dropped hints of this happening a couple of years ago.
Gerard Pique, the defensive pillar of FC Barcelona, has stated that he has made up his mind to give up playing football by the end of 2019-20 season in order to run for the next club-presidential elections in 2021.
Having played for the Catalan club 469 times with contributing in 53 goals, the player has been vocal on his ambitions to be in the directorial management of the club. The player also was the part of the much-famed La Masia academy.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Pique is firm in his decision to run for the role of Barcelona President which will be up for grabs after the next season.
Just a couple of years ago he said, “Yes, when I say things I mean them. I want to be president of Barca. It’s a step I’d like to take when I retire."
“As a president, I could do really well for this club, because it’s what I am passionate about. My playing career will [one day] come to an end and the step I’d like to take is to become Barcelona president,” he said.
The defender left La Masia when Manchester United came calling in 2004, and finally came back to Camp Nou after winning the Champions League, Premier League and the Community Shield in the 2007-08 season.
After the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2018, Piqué announced his retirement from international football on 11th August.
