Arguably the best keeper of the Premier League was brought down to shambles by the Gunners' midfielder.

Manchester United’s unbeaten run under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer came to an end when they met Arsenal at the Emirates yesterday. Unai Emery’s side won 2-0 on the night with goals from Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got another one from 12 yards.

United goalkeeper David de Gea was at the centre of debate when they conceded the first goal. Granit Xhaka caught the Spain number 1 unawares with his strike taken from outside the area curling into the back of the net.

Following this, Liverpool and Manchester United legends Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville got involved in a heated debate inside the Sky Sports studio over the extent of blame that lay on De Gea’s shoulders concerning the first goal.

Jamie Carragher was quick to suggest that David de Gea wasn’t entirely at fault, however, Gary Neville saw things a little differently.

“The way Xhaka strikes it and how these balls move, it moves quite late, I think he just comes across thinking it's going to be a routine save coming right at him. It gets to the penalty spot and just seems to deviate,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

The goal might haunt David for nights to come

“In slow motion it looks like he should do more, but in real time you see that wicked movement and I wouldn't be too harsh on him.

Gary Neville disagreed on this point.

“In terms of the goal, I thought David De Gea made a big mistake,” Neville explained

“I don’t know why he (Carragher) wasn’t sure about it, It’s gone in the centre of the goal from 30 yards out. It’s not even a debate.”

Following this, the debate became a little personal with Carragher enquiring Neville on why everyone should share the same opinion as him.

Neville: “If the ball goes into his net from 30 yards out, it’s not even a debate.

Carragher: “It wasn’t in the centre of his net. If that would have taken a deflection. So if the ball takes a deflection... it moved that much!"

Neville: "David de Gea is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He's made a mistake, simple as that. At the end of the day, it's got to be a goalkeeping error."

Carragher: "But how big is the swing from one side to the other?"

Neville: "It swings early!"

Carragher: "It swings early? It doesn't! By the time it gets to the penalty spot it shifts."

Neville: "I don't want to focus on it too much. I think it's a mistake and it was a determining factor in that match."
