Liverpool are at the second position with one more game to play.
Manchester City ran past Everton with two stoppage-time goals in either half. Aymeric Laporte and Gabriel Jesus scored in 45+2 and 90+7 minutes to take Pep Guardiola's team to the top of the Premier League table since 15th December 2018.
City and Liverpool are tied on points, but the goal difference gives the notch to City having scored seven more than the Reds.
Talking after the win, Pep said that the league isn't over. He insisted that it is still a long road to go and is of the opinion that the goal difference will be key at the end.
“It’s a question for them. We are leaders. Twelve games to play, a lot of points,” said Guardiola when asked what his side going top of the table meant.
“Now comes a big test, a big goal. Chelsea are an exceptional team who have had seven days to prepare. We have to prepare well. It really is a final for us this weekend. If we are able to take these points, it is a huge step forward,” he told football365.
The City boss was impressed with the squad. He said, “The reality is we could have been, one month ago, 10 points behind when we played Liverpool."
He added, "A few days ago we could have been seven points behind. Now we are top of the league. The lesson is never to give up. That is the best advice. That is a lesson for all athletes. Try to win the games, because life can change immediately.”
Guardiola realises that Everton have been a difficult club for the Cityzens to play since a long time.
He said, “The performance is not as good as we expect. Goodison Park is always difficult for Manchester City in the last decade. We made a good first half. We didn’t concede one shot on target here at Goodison Park, which is not normal.”
Manchester City host Chelsea on Sunday in the Premier League. Chelsea are high on spirits having scored five goals in the last game week with newcomer Gonzalo Higuain scoring a brace at his home debut.
