Top five transfers in the Premier League this season
Pep Guardiola broke Manchester City's transfer record by signing Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City.
After last year's vote, the transfer deadline for English clubs had been shifted to 9th August so as to avoid distractions once the new season got underway. Hence, this has sent the Premier League clubs into overdrive; the race to sign new players is well underway and reaching its final stage.
However, there have already been some interesting additions and transfers in the Premier League. Therefore, we take a look at the top five confirmed transfers in the English top flight to date.
5. Lucas Torreira – Sampdoria to Arsenal (£26.4m)
Watch: Lucas Torreira's debut for Arsenal
The Uruguay international had a pretty decent World Cup where he showed what he can do, if nurtured properly. The former Sampdoria midfielder is a prime example of what the Gunners have been missing – a tenacious midfielder to provide able protection to the backline.
The 22-year old has lots of time on his hands and if utilized properly by new boss Unai Emery, the Gunners could reap the benefits.
4. Riyad Mahrez – Leicester City to Manchester City (£61m)

The talismanic Algerian was central to Leicester City’s title-winning season back in 2015/2016. The obvious transfer rumours started ever since and this move was a long time in coming.
City biss Pep Guardiola broke the club record for Mahrez and is believed to hold him in high regard. However, some critics have pointed out that shelling such a huge amount for a squad player is impractical since Manchester City are well stocked with attacking options.
3. Jorginho – Napoli to Chelsea (£53m)
Watch: Goals and skills by Jorginho for Napoli last season
The midfielder was snatched away by Chelsea at the last moment from Manchester City, who were the favourites for his signature. The appointment of Maurizio Sarri, Jorginho’s former manager, as Chelsea’s manager played a crucial role in luring him away.
Jorginho is a brilliant passer of the ball with a vision of top quality. He can fill Nemanja Matic’s role at Chelsea that remained vacant since the departure of the Serbian to Manchester United. It was also reported that the £53m price that Chelsea paid was a joint package including the player and the coach.

2. Fred – Shakhtar Donetsk to Manchester United (£53.10m)
Watch: Fred Vs Real Madrid in pre-season
While it has been a rather frustrating transfer window for Jose Mourinho’s team, Fred was signed relatively early in the winndow. He joined the Red Devils from Shakhtar Donetsk on a five-year deal.
The defensive midfielder will fit in perfectly alongside Matic in the United midfield, allowing Paul Pogba to venture higher up the field in the process. Indeed, many pundits believe that the prime reason for this transfer was to set Pogba free from defensive duties, resulting in him contributing more as an attacking option.
1. Alisson Becker – AS Roma to Liverpool (£67m)
Watch: Alisson's Liverpool debut
Liverpool made headlines after securing Alisson’s services for a whopping sum that made the Brazilian, the most expensive goalkeeper in the world. The Reds were desperate in their search for a top-notch goalkeeper after Loris Karius’ howlers had cost them the final of the UEFA Champions League. The Brazilian had a sensational 79.26 per cent save percentage in Serie A last season, the best in the league.
While that concludes our list, other notable transfers within the Premier League cannot be overlooked. Max Meyer to Crystal Palace, Andre Schurrle to Fulham, Andriy Yarmolenko, Felipe Anderson and Lukasz Fabianski to West Ham among many others, have set the stage for a mouthwatering upcoming season.
