I-League clubs except Mohun Bagan register teams for Super Cup main round

The deadline for team registration for the Mariners was on 22 March.

The Super Cup fiasco looks to be in its final episode as the I-League clubs have broken their stance and have registered teams for the main round of the knockout tournament.

As per reports, the I-League clubs have registered their teams for the Super Cup barring Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan.

Their city rivals East Bengal have also registered their team for the main round of the tournament. The Red and Gold Brigade had differences of opinion with their their investors, Quess Corp and the club management as the investors wanted to stand with the other I-League clubs. In the meantime, the club executive committee followed their interest, as they wanted to field their own team, President's XI in the tournament, going against the will of their investors. However, the tiff seems to have come to an end for now, as they have registered their first-team for the tournament.

All this started when nine I-League clubs decided to boycott the Super Cup after facing what they alleged to be unfair treatment from the AIFF. However, the clubs have now broken their stance, following AIFF President Praful Patel's assurance to hold a meeting with all the club owners in mid-April.

The deadline for team registration for the clubs who gained direct entry to the main round of the Super Cup was on 22 March and for clubs like Gokulam Kerala, Aizawl FC and Minerva Punjab, who were scheduled to play in the Qualifiers the last date of registration was 10 March.

But, the three I-League clubs who were scheduled to play in the qualifiers failed to turn up on the matchdays, handing their opponents walk-over victories in the process. However, after Patel's assurance, the clubs wanted the tournament to start afresh from the qualifiers, but, the AIFF have turned down that request.

Currently, I-League champs Chennai City, runners-up East Bengal, Churchill Brothers, NEROCA and Indian Arrows along with Real Kashmir, have registered their teams for the main round of the event. Meaning that the Mariners are the only team yet to register their team for the tournament.

The final round of the Super Cup starts on March 29 with former ISL champions Chennaiyin FC taking on Mumbai City FC at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.
