GPL 2019-20: Salgaocar FC cruise past Velsao SCC for comfortable win
Devendra Murgaonkar and Stephen Satarkar scored for the Green Brigade in the second half.
Salgaocar Football Club registered a 2-0 win over Velsao Sports and Cultural Club in the Goa Football Association Goa Professional League at Nagoa ground, Verna, on Tuesday.
Devendra Murgaonkar and Stephen Satarkar scored for the Green Brigades in the second session.
The scoreline doesn’t define the match as Velsao SCC had better ball possession in the first 45 minutes. They played good football shifting sides whenever needed and created chances too, but failed to score.
Salgaocar FC nearly broke the deadlock in the first session through Devendra but despite finding the back of the net, the lad’s effort was just fully flagged offside.
Salgaocar FC’s Andrew had a shot at goal which was saved by the Velsao keeper Presley Mascarenhas.
In the second half, Velsao once again played better football until Salgaocar FC out of a counter attack had an attempt at goal through Devendra which was pushed for a corner by Velsao keeper Presley.
Later, Salgaocar FC’s Stephen broke the rival half from the centre and found Selwyn on the right flank who slashed a cross to Devendra but the last man’s effort narrowly missed the mark.
In the 65th minute, Velsao’s Sadik Shaikh played a dangerous ball in the box, but before Laiwang Bohham could reach the ball, Salgaocar keeper Jason D’Melo punched away to safety.
Finally, Salgaocar FC took the lead through Devendra Murgaonkar in the 66th minute when he latched on to a defence splitting pass from Selwyn Miranda from the midfield.
Minutes later Velsao should have equalized when Bersal Viegas whipped in a cross from the right flank but Shubham Rao and Laiwang both missed the header.
Minutes later there was another chance for Velsao when Shubham played Laiwang on the right and the striker squared it in for Joseph whose touch proved little heavy as the ball sailed over the bar.
At the other end, Salgaocar FC doubled the lead when Chaitan passed to Stephen who made little room for himself before slotting home for the second.
Velsao didn’t give up as they kept trying to get the goals and Inacio Colaco played Remedious Vaz just outside the box but the latter’s effort narrowly curled over the bar.
Velsao’s Shubham played an excellent delivery in the box which should have been a goal but Laiwang failed to connect. A slightest touch would have seen the ball at the back of the net.
Salgaocar FC’s Chaitan came with a goal line save to deny Velsao’s Leny who connected brilliantly to Inacio’s corner. Velsao keeper cam with a brilliant save to deny Salgaocar Stephen and later Samvel shot over the bar off a rebound
