India at Men's Hockey World Cup 2023: Squad, Schedule & more
The hosts will be looking to make the most of familiar surrounding in their quest for the title.
India will be looking to make a statement of intent in the upcoming 15th FIH Hockey World Cup to be held in Odisha in the schedule of January 13 through January 29.
The Men in Blue have been in a rich vein of form since the turn of the decade culminating in a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics and a silver in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Graham Reid, the former Kookaburras coach has galvanised the team and has brought out the best in the outfit. There has been a synergy among the players who are stepping out of their shells to perform for the country.
The captain of the team and ace penalty corner specialist, Harmanpreet Singh, is leading from the front. Though India lost their five-match test against Australia 4-1, there were clear signs of improvement in mentality and it was nothing like the 7-0 horror show that happened in Birmingham.
India will be facing a young and energetic Spanish side in their opening fixture on January 13 followed by a tactically astute England and World number-15 Wales as the last match in group D, where, ironically, "D" stands for "death".
The state of Odisha has equipped the Kalinga Stadium and the Birsa Munda International Stadium with state-of-the-art facilities. Whether India will shine under the grandiose of the stadiums and bring home the honour which has been eluding the team since 1975, only time will tell.
