The 15th edition of the FIH Hockey World Cup has begun in Odisha, India. India is hosting this prestigious tournament consecutively. Indian team is one of the favourites for the championship. India in this edition is placed in Pool D with Spain and England and Wales. India’s pool may look easy to some extent but teams like England and Spain have the ability to create trouble in the group. Wales is playing their first-ever World Cup tournament. India started their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win against Spain and then on 15th January, they will face England in their second game. England had been in a good run of form in recent years.
England in Pool D is a bigger threat for India than Spain and Wales. In last three World Cup tournaments England has finished in Top 3. In the other hand India struggled to go past Group round. India’s best result after 1975 Championship came in 2018. After winning their maiden World Cup title in 1975, India struggled to qualify for the Knockouts, in 2018 they Qualified after 43 long years. In head to head fight between India vs England, England has been a dominant team. They have got better records against India in most of the games they played against each other.
India will face England in their second Pool game in Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on 15th January. Both teams will face off each other after their opening game, this will ease some of the pressure of big tournament.
