Top five Countries with most goals in Hockey Men's World Cup

Over the 14 editions, only three countries have crossed the 200-goal mark

Over the 14 editions of the Hockey Men's World Cup, 605 games have been played and 2433 goals have been scored with an average of around 4 per game. A total of 10 nations have scored more than 100, 3 have crossed 200 while only one team ever has scored past the 300-mark. Let's take a look at the top five scoring nations in the history of the Men's Hockey World Cup.

5. Spain (186)

"Redsticks", as they are known, have the fifth most number of goals in the tournament's history. They have competed in every edition of the World Cup since its inception in 1971. However, they haven't ever won the ultimate prize. The closest they came was in the 1998 Final where the Netherlands handed them the defeat. The tally of 186 goals comes in 99 matches. While England is breathing down their neck with 175 goals in the same amount of matches. They both are placed in Pool D alongside hosts India.

4. India (220)

Currently ranked sixth in the World Rankings, India boasts one of the richest histories in Hockey. However, the Olympic ordeals have failed to be repeated at the World Cup. The only triumphant campaign came all the way in 1975. There has been a major slump in the state of India's national sport but this time, the Blue Tigers are entering as a contender.

Currently, India's World Cup goal tally stands at 220 in 101 games and is the fourth team in history with 200 goals in Men's Hockey World Cup.

3. Pakistan (235)

Pakistan has won the most number of Men's Hockey World Cup since its inception (4). Despite their last winning a game at this tournament in 2010, they stand strong in the third position with 235 goals in 89 games.

Pakistan's four World Cups came in the years 1971, 1978, 1981 and 1994. They aren't participating in this year's World Cup.

2. Netherlands (299)

The Netherlands are the only team to play 100 games at the World Cup. In those hundred games, they scored 299 goals and won a total of 61 games. With 25 individual goals, Paul Litjens is the highest goalscorer in the tournament's history as well.

Their win percentage of 61 is only second to the Aussies. Alongside the Aussies, the Dutchmen are also top contenders to lift the World Cup for the fourth time.

1. Australia (341)

Kookaburras are the only side to ever breach the 300 mark in the World Cup. They have scored a total of 341 goals in 98 appearances, holding the average of the most number of goals per game. Their win percentage of 75 is also the highest amongst all the sides who represented their country.

While they won it in 1986, 2010 and 2014, they are the top contenders to equal Pakistan for the fourth title.
