All England Open 2023 Day 4 Highlights: Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand enter semis
Welcome to the live blog for the Day 4 of the ongoing All England Open 2023 Badminton Championships.
After a Day 3 full of surprises (mostly unpleasant), Day 4 has only one Indian pair alive in the All England Open tournament. The women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are scheduled to play in the quarter-final match against the Chinese pair of Li Wen Mei and Liu Xuan Xuan.
The Indian pair comes into the game after having defeated the experienced Japanese duo of Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota. The Japanese pair have been the World No. 1s for a long time and were the No. 1 seeded pair at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Women's Doubles category. The win, as aforementioned, came as a surprise to many. More so because their experienced counterparts like Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen and many others bowed out of the tournament before they went on the court to play their game.
However, the young Indian pair made the job easy by pulling out a straight-sets victory, much to the surprise of many. Treesa and Gayatri are no strangers when it comes to the prestigious All England Open tournament.
The Indian duo reached the quarter-finals last year as well. And the way they dominated the Japanese veterans, it looks like their story at the All England Open 2023 is only getting started. Their next challengers, however, are no pushovers as well.
The Chinese duo are currently the World No 1s in the BWF World Tour rankings and would be as big challengers as the Japanese duo. But if the Indians keep their focus and head into the game, it would not be wrong to place a bet on them beating the Chinese pair as well.
