The tournament is expected to see more than 7000 athletes participate.

The schedule of Day 1 of Table Tennis event of the National Games is out. National Games will return after a seven-year hiatus on Tuesday. This will be the 36th edition happening in Gujarat in six major cities Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar. Initially, Goa were to host the Games.

28 states, 8 Union Territories and the Indian Armed Forces will participate, with 7000+ athletes expected to take the field. Few indigenous sports such as Mallakhamb, Yogasana etc will make their debut along with 34 other sports.

Services have been the most successful side finishing first with 91 gold, 33 silver, and 35 bronze medals. Kerala finished second with 54 gold, 48 silver, and 60 bronze, the most successful state.

Table Tennis will be the first event starting on 20th September, but the games officially commence on 27th September to 10th October. The paddlers are set to take part in the World Table Tennis Championships starting early next month.

The action starts with the team events with Men’s and women’s teams taking part. Three rounds will be completed on Day 1 starting at 11 AM until 7 PM. India’s top paddler Sathiyan Gnanasekaran (Tamil Nadu), Achanta Sharath Kamal (Tamil Nadu), Manika Batra (Delhi), and the home favourite Harmeet Desai (Gujarat) will spearhead the attack for their respective states.

In the 2015 National Games, Tamil Nadu won six medals in Table Tennis (3G, 2S, 1B) the highest. Amalraj Anthony won men’s singles, team men’s gold, and Shamini with women’s singles. Sathiyan Gnanasekaran won the team men’s along with Amalraj and doubles silver.

This time around Tamil Nadu looks favourite to top the medals tally but will have a good fight from Gujarat the home state and a few more.
