BWF Singapore Open: PV Sindhu scripts history with title triumph
The ace Indian shuttler defeated China’s Wang Zhi Yi in the final
Indian shuttler PV Sindhu scripted history once again by clinching the BWF Super 500 Singapore Open. Sindhu defeated Chinese shuttler, Wang Zhi Yi, in the final 21-9, 11-21 and 21-15.
The finalists met each other only for the second time. Previously, Sindhu had triumphed 21-18, 21-13 over Wang in the All England Open earlier this year. Sindhu once again was at her imperious best and she also received helped by a few unforced errors from Wang’s end to run into a 13-2 lead. From there on, it became a formality to finish the first game which Sindhu duly did taking it 21-9 within 12 minutes.
Wang came back better taking a 6-0 lead in the second game. From there on, despite Sindhu’s best efforts, the Chinese chipped away to take the second game into a decider. But with Sindhu’s form behind her, the Indian got herself back together and stormed through the third game to take it 21-15. Sindhu combined deft drops with agile movement to run her opponent off the court. Wang too dropped her guard with plenty of unforced errors in the game.
Plenty of praise and applause came in from all parts for Sindhu’s historic victory including India’s prime minister Narendra Modi. The prime minister praised PV Sindhu’s talent and effort. He noted the title win as a proud moment for the country and mentioned that it will inspire a lot of other upcoming players.
Sindhu’s run continues from her bronze medal win in the Tokyo Olympics. She has now won her third title this year along with the Swiss Open and the Syed Modi International. But the Singapore Open is Sindhu’s first Super 500 triumph. Hence, the victory will give her a lot of confidence going into the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
