Gurdeep Singh lifts bronze in weightlifting +109kg at CWG 2022

His medal ended India's weightlifting campaign in double figures.

Gurdeep Singh won bronze in weightlifting men’s 109+kg category final at Commonwealth Games 2022. He lifted a combined tally of 390kgs. Singh was separated by a difference of four KGs from silver medallist David Andrew Liti of New Zealand (394kgs) and 15KGs from gold medallist Muhammad Nooh Dastgir Butt of Pakistan (405kgs).

Gurdeep began his snatch round with an unsuccessful lift of 167kgs. He did achieve it in his second attempt. Gurdeep Singh ended his snatch round in the manner he started it - with a failed lift. However, the weight was 173kgs. Gurdeep ended the Snatch round at overall third.

In the clean and jerk round, he successfully lifted 207kgs in his first attempt. He failed to execute a lift of an additional eights kgs in his second attempt - 215kgs. But, Gurdeep displayed great determination to pull off 223kgs in his final lift of the round and overall as well. 

Meanwhile, Muhammad Butt proved to be invincible as he broke Games Record in both the snatch and clean & jerk round enroute to his successful gold quest. 

Redemption Complete

Gurdeep is 26 years old. He belongs to a farmer family in Khanna, Punjab. He was introduced to the sport by his family mainly to keep him fit and make productive use of his free time.

Gurdeep Singh had finished fourth in the previous edition of the CWG - Gold Coast 2014. His bronze in CWG - Birmingham 2022 adds to his tally of medals in competitions like the Commonwealth Senior Championship 2021 and the 2017 Commonwealth Junior Championship.

Indian weightlifting contingent end on a high

The Indian weightlifters won a total of 10 medals (3 golds, 3 silvers, 4 bronzes) in CWG 2022. They bettered their previous tally of nine medals won in CWG 2018. In the medal standings for this discipline, India topped the table with England and Canada in second and third position respectively.
