Indian women script history, clinch gold in lawn bowls at CWG

The fours team beat South Africa in the final on Tuesday.

It’s was gold for the Indian women’s team as they scripted history by winning a medal for the first time in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games 2022. They defeated South Africa by 17-10 in women’s four team. The team of Lovely Choubey(lead), Pinki(second), Nayanmoni Saikia(third), and Rupa Rani Tirkey (skip) overcame South Africa’s challenge to register their name in history books.

This has been the first Indian team who reached the finals and also won a medal in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games. A game not so famous in India will now be recognized after this triumph.

South Africa had unbeaten run in the tournament although they had a draw against New Zealand. And now they have been beaten by Indian challenge.

After end-1, India were leading 1-0 but after end- 2, South Africa cut down the deficit and took the lead. After end-3, India and SA were leveled at 2 all. When the 4 and 5 ends ended, India were ahead as it took a 4-2 lead. India had a good 6th end when they were ahead by 7-2. India extended its lead after end-7 with 8-2.

It was this moment when South Africa staged a magnificent comeback when they earned back to back points to equal India’s score 8-8 after end-10. And then took the lead to get ahead of India 10-8. But India managed to make a comeback as they equalled 10-10 after end -12. And then good throws landed them to a 12-10 lead after end-13. And then there was no looking back as they took 3 points in end-14. With last end to go, India were comfortably placed 15-10. In the last end, India managed some good throws and played it safely to finish 17-10.

Earlier, the Indian quartet of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey has defeated New Zealand’s women’s four team of Selina Goddard(lead), Nicole Toomey(second), Tayle Bruce(third), and Val Smith(skip) by 16-13 in the semi-final. After conceding a 0-5 lead against the Kiwis after the second-end, they produced a stunning comeback to cross the line.

With this win, India currently stands at 6th position with 10 medals. India has now 4 gold, 3 silver and as many bronze. Commonwealth Games 2022 started in Birmingham from July 28 and will go on till August 8.
