Who are the medal contenders for India on Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 5

India currently holds three gold medals all of them have come from weightlifting.

So far India has fared well in this edition of the Commonwealth Games, as they've won six medals. But, all the medals have come in weightlifting. Indian weightlifters are having a golden run and are showing a lot of promise at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

In the coming days also, there are a number of medals lined up for the Indian weightlifters. Other than weightlifting, India has secured a medal in lawn bowls too. As the games are progressing towards the halfway point, more medals will come from other events. Let’s look at some probable chances of medals on Day 5 of CWG’22.

Punam Yadav -  Women’s 76kg category Finals – Weightlifting

Punam Yadav will be in action in the finals of the women’s 76Kg category in weightlifting on Day 5 of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

She recently won the gold medal in the women’s 76kg gold medal at the National Weightlifting Championships at the KIIT University campus in Bhubaneswar. Punam also represented India at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and won a bronze medal by lifting a total weight of 202kg (88S + 114C&J). In the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she claimed a gold medal lifting a total of 222kg (100S + 122C&J) in the 69kh division.

Vikas Thakur – Men’s 96 kg Finals - Weightlifting

Vikas Thakur will contest for gold on Day 5 of the CWG’22. In February, this year, he clinched gold in the men’s 96kg event n Singapore and qualified for Commonwealth Games.

Therefore, the possibility of him winning gold in the final is very high. He also won silver in the men’s 85kg weight class at the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, continuing the streak, he again conquered at the 2018 CWG on the Gold Coast with a bronze.

Usha Bannur Natesh Kumara – Women’s 87kg Finals

Usha Bannur Natesh Kumar will be in action on Day 5 in the women’s 87kg finals in weightlifting. She will hope to repeat what Indian weightlifters have so far done at the Commonwealth Games ’22, Birmingham.

Lawn Bowls – Women’s Fours Gold Medal Match – IND vs RSA

Lawn bowls, a sport which had been participating since 2010 but never won a medal in this has now ensured a medal on Monday. The Indian lawn bowls women’s fours team scripted history by reaching the final of the CWG’22, beating New Zealand in a tight content.

They now faces RSA in the final scheduled on Day 5 of the CWG’22. The Indian team comprising of Rupa Rani Tirkey, Lovely Choubey, Nayanmoni Saikia and Pinki defeated NZ by 16-13 after 15 ends. 

Table Tennis Men's Final

Indian Men's Table Tennis will try to defend their title in Tuesday's final now that they defeat Nigeria in the semi-finals. Defending champions India reached the semi-finals after thrashing Bangladesh 3-0 in the third last-tie on Sunday. Indian Men's table team consists of Harmeet Desai, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, and Achanta Sharath Kamal. The trio of Sharath Kamal, Harmeet and Gnanasekaran made it to the semi-finals after defeating Barbados, Singapore and Northern Island and Bangladesh by identical 3-0 margins in the group stage. Now they have the golden chance to repeat the heroics of Gold Coast.

Seema Punia - Women's Discuss throw final - Athletics

The whole Indian contingent will cheer when 39 -year old Seema Punia will take the centre stage at Alexander Stadium on Day 5. Athletics is due to start on August 2 and several Indian athletes are waiting to cross the line. One of the most decorated athletes in the CWG, women's discuss thrower Seema Punia will attract the eyeballs on an opening day as she eyes her fifth straight medal at the Commonwealth Games. She has won three silver medals and a bronze in the previous four editions of the CWG. India will have high expectations from her to bring gold this time.

Artistic Gymnastics- Satyajit Mondal - Men's Vault Finals

In gymnastics, Satyajit Mondal will hope to win a medal when he will compete with the best of the lots in the Men's Vault finals on Tuesday. Earlier, in the men's team event, he competed along with Saif Tamboli and Yogeshwar Singh bowed out of the men's event. However, in the individual event, Mondal will look to clinch a medal. Hailing from Bengal, and nicknamed 'Raja', Mondal finished fifth in the vault event on his international debut at the World Challenge Cup last month.

Saif Tamboli - Men's parallel bars final

Saif Tamboli will compete in the finals of the Men's parallel bars on Tuesday. He also couldn't qualify for the finals of the men's team event. Having overcome three ACL surgeries in both his legs in the space of three months, Tamboli will look to prove himself on the big stage on Tuesday in the Men's parallel bars final.

Badminton- Mixed Team finals

Badminton has been one of the strongest disciplines of India which has fetched medals in previous editions of the Commonwealth Games and this time too it is likely to bring multiple medals. India's mixed badminton team reached the finals after defeating Singapore 3-0 in the semi-finals on Monday. India is likely to defend its title on Tuesday.

They have crushed South Africa in the quarter-finals and now would want to defend their title. Indian badminton mixed squad consists of Lakshya Sen, Ashwini Ponnappa, B Sumeeth Reddy, P.V Sindhu, Tressa Jolly, Gayatri Gopichand and Chirag Shetty.
