Top five goalscorers at the women's FIH Hockey 5s

The inaugural edition of the tournament saw lots of exciting attacking hockey.

Indian women’s hockey team took recently took part in the Hockey 5s tournament in Lausanne, Switzerland. The new, fast-paced version of hockey saw its beginning amidst a lot of excitement. In this version of field hockey, the playing area is smaller, the players are lesser, and the rules are different from regular hockey. Games are short and quick in duration, leading to aggressive competition from both teams. 

While the men’s team won the inaugural tournament, the women’s team could not make it to the final. Having said that, the team provided a lot of entertainment and showed promise during their time at the championship. Mumtaz Khan was one of the best performers on the squad and also scored a bunch of goals.

Apart from India, teams like Switzerland, Uruguay, South Africa and Poland were also participating in the women’s tournament in Lausanne. There were a lot of goals in the tournament and here is a look at the top five individual players who scored the most for their respective countries:

5. Toni Marks - 4 goals

Toni Marks was one of the major positives for South Africa from the Hockey 5s tournament in picturesque Lausanne. She scored four goals for the team from four outings in the group stage. Interestingly, she scored a hattrick against Poland in a 5-2 win. The player has a good eye for goal and scored her fourth against Uruguay but ended on the losing side. 

4. Mumtaz Khan - 5 goals

India’s Mumtaz Khan has featured for the senior team in the longer format as well. She was a consistent performer at the Hockey 5s in Lausanne, Switzerland. Thanks to her precise finishing, Khan got five goals for her effort in India’s aspirations for a final spot. Unfortunately, overall the Indian team scored only 12 goals and secured fourth place despite Khan scoring a brace in the final fixture against South Africa.  

3. Dirkie Chamberlain - 5 goals

Dirkie Chamberlain was representing South Africa in the tournament. She too scored five goals in four games for the outfit. In one of her best performances of the tournament, she scored an excellent hat-trick against India in a 4-4 draw. Chamberlain’s finishing was particularly noteworthy and her energy was also infectious. 

2. Manuela Vilar - 7 goals

Uruguay was a strong favourite to win the competition and they did it with style. Two of their best performers got the most number of goals. Manuela Vilar was one of the two who was having an internal battle to score most times in the Hockey 5s tournament. With seven goals to her name, Vilar took the second spot behind her teammate. Her performances were crucial in leading the country to lift the title. She scored a brace in the final against Switzerland.

1. Teresa Viana - 8 goals

Teresa Viana was the highest individual goalscorer at the Hockey 5s women’s tournament in Lausanne, Switzerland. She scored eight times, playing a key role in making Uruguay the champions of the inaugural edition. She scored a goal in the final as well against the hosts Switzerland. Viana also got a brace against the Swiss in the group fixtures and kept her scoring touch throughout the tournament.
