Five female players with most Grand Slam singles titles of all time
These women are legendary figures in the sport of tennis.
In the sport of tennis, a Grand Slam tournament is one of the toughest feats to achieve. There have been four major Grand Slams since the beginning, namely the Australian Open, the French Open, the Wimbledon and the US Open.
Here is a look at the top five female players with the most Grand Slam singles titles in tennis
5. Chris Evert/Martina Navratilova - 18 titles
Two players hold the title for the fifth-highest tally of Grand Slam wins in their careers. First of the two is Chris Evert, one of the finest female tennis players that the world has seen. The American is a former World No.1 who managed to win 18 Grand Slams in her career. She won the Australian Open two times, the French Open seven times, the Wimbledon three times and the US Open six times.
Martina Navratilova is the second female tennis player to win 18 Grand Slam titles. She is only the second female to win more than 300 matches in Grand Slam tournaments. The Czechoslovakian and American former World No.1 won the Australian Open three times, the French Open two times, the Wimbledon nine times (a record for a woman) and the US Open four times.
4. Helen Wills Moody - 19 titles
Helen Wills Moody won a whopping 19 Grand Slam titles back when she was a professional tennis player. The American won 31 Grand Slam titles if one is to consider all the categories, such as the doubles and mixed doubles in addition to singles. Although she passed away in 1998, aged 92, her legacy lives on.
Often called the greatest female tennis player of all time, she once held a 180-match winning streak. In terms of Grand Slam titles in the singles category, she won the French Open four times, the Wimbledon eight times and the US Open seven times.
3. Steffi Graf - 22 titles
Steffi Graf has won 22 Grand Slam titles in her professional career. She won the Australian Open four times, the French Open six times, the Wimbledon seven times and the US Open five times. Graf remains one of the most graceful athletes of her time with a sensational ability to accurately play her strokes.
Steffi Graf married Andre Agassi, who himself is a legendary figure in men’s tennis. Furthermore, she held the World No.1 ranking for 377 weeks which is a record. Graf was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2004.
2. Serena Williams - 23 titles
Few female tennis athletes can hit the ball harder than Serena Williams. She is regarded as the most powerful female player to ever grace the sport. Williams stormed her way to 23 Grand Slam titles, the second-best tally of all-time in women’s tennis.
She won the Australian Open seven times, the French Open three times, the Wimbledon seven times and the US Open six times. This tally of 23 is the most by any player in the Open Era. To add to that, she has won multiple Grand Slams in the doubles and mixed doubles categories as well.
1. Margaret Court - 24 titles
Margaret Court is the leading female player ever with 24 titles. The Australian also won 19 Grand Slam women's doubles titles, and 21 mixed doubles titles, taking her overall tally to 64.
Expectedly, she is regarded as the best female tennis player of all time. Her 11 wins at the Australian Open remain a record in women’s tennis for the most single Grand Slam wins. In addition, she also has five French Open titles, three Wimbledon titles and five US Open titles.
