A number of key events are lined up for the Indian pugilists this year.
Boxing is certainly one of India's best sports which has brought in multiple Olympic medals. Apart from shooting, wrestling and hockey, boxing has proved to be one of India's most productive medal-winning sports. Even during last year's Tokyo Olympics, Assam's Lovlina Borgohain bought a bronze medal for the nation. Lovlina also became the first woman from the state to represent her country at the Olympics.
Performances of other boxers like Pooja Rani and Satish Kumar were impressive too. Although they failed to win medals, they deserve credit for their valiant efforts. Now that the Tokyo Olympics are behind us, we gear up for some major boxing action that awaits us this year. So, without further ado, we jump right in to this year's boxing schedule that is bound to keep us on the edge of our seat.
April
AIBA Global Boxing Cup 2022
The 13th edition of the AIBA Global Boxing Cup will take place in April 2022. The competition which was earlier known as the Boxing World Cup had started in 1979 and was discontinued after the 2008 edition.
AIBA President Umar Kremlev has supported the idea of introducing the tournament in the boxing calendar once again. Therefore, we will see it’s return this year. It must be noted that it is a male-only event. The venue will be Russia, with 15 different cities to host the competition, and will be the first major event for Indian boxing in 2022.
May
Women's Boxing World Championships: May 6 -21
The Women's Boxing World Championships will finally see the light of day in May. The event which was initially set for December got postponed to March. But now the organizers have finally decided to fix in on May. AIBA has officially announced it on their website.
Turkey faced a spike in COVID cases, with nearly 25,000 people getting affected by the virus. On top of that, nearly 183 deaths were reported last November, all falling victim to the delta variant of the virus. The tournament will have a prize fund of $2.4m and will be contested across 12 weight categories.
July
Commonwealth Games: July 28 - August 8
The Commonwealth Games 2022 will take place in Birmingham, England between July 28 - August 8. The previous edition in 2018 on the Gold Coast was a memorable one for Indian boxing. India finished at the second place in the medal table, with three golds, three silvers and three bronze.
Mary Kom, Vikas Krishan Yadav and Gaurav Solanki won gold medals for the Indian boxing contingent . Tokyo Olympics trio Amit Panghal, Manish Kaushik and Satish Kumar claimed silver. Bronze medals went to Mohammad Hussamuddin, Manoj Kumar and Naman Tanwar. With a talented Indian contingent, the boxers are once again expected to shine at this prestigious competition.
All eyes here will definitely be on Assam's Lovlina, as she will be making her Commonwealth Games debut. The Olympic bronze medalist will more than look forward to adding a gold to her tally in the UK.
September
Asian Games 2022: September 10-25
The 19th edition of the Asian Games will take place in Hangzhou, China between September 10-25. Hangzhou will also become the third Chinese city to host the prestigious meet after Beijing (1990) and Guangzhou (2010).
The Asian Games will include athletes from Oceania for the first time. India had won a meagre two medals in Jakarta in 2018. Indian boxing sensation Amit Panghal will be defending his title. Vikas Krishan Yadav, who had won a bronze medal at the previous edition, will be aiming to do even better this year. Other Indian pugilists will also aim to step up their performances and shine on the continental stage.
India will be more determined to finish better than their eighth position at the 2018th edition.
November
AIBA Youth World Championships
The AIBA Youth World Championships will commence from November this year. It will witness youngsters , both men and women, competing to be crowned the new champions. Initially, it was set to take place in September, but later got postponed. The last edition of the games had taken place in April 2021. This year it will be hosted in La Nucia, Spain.
The event also managed to produce India's best result. The country went to the top of the table. They won eight golds and three bronze medals. The young Indian boxing contingent will surely look to ride on that momentum and put up a similar performance this year as well.
