Pair of Mehuli and Tushar reached finals of ISSF World Cup

The Indian contingent had a mixed day at the prestigious tournament.

Indian shooting athletes are trying their best to secure medals at the ongoing leg of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup 2022 in Changwon, South Korea. The competition is intense as the cream of the crop from across the globe participates. Arjun Babuta delivered India’s first gold medal yesterday, setting a benchmark for the rest of the contingent.

There was plenty of action at the 2022 ISSF World Cup on Tuesday. Several Indian athletes were in action in various disciplines across the pistol, rifle and shotgun events. The day had it all for the Indian fans, from impressive performances to major disappointments.

Here is a look at Tuesday’s action and results from the 2022 ISSF World Cup:

Men’s 10m Air Pistol

India had three players in the final of the Men’s 10m Air Pistol event. Despite the favourable chances of winning a medal, the athletes came away with nothing to show for their efforts. Naveen of India took the fourth position with a 250.7 score. The fifth and sixth spots went to Shiva Narwal and Sagar Dangi who managed 199.7 and 199.2 scores on the board respectively. Finishing in the top two places, Damir Mikec of Serbia and Luca Tesconi of Italy went to the gold medal clash. In the end, the Serbian came away as the winner by a 17-5 score.

Women’s 10m Air Pistol

Chances of a medal in the Women's 10m Air Pistol were less as India had only one representative in the finals. Yuvika Tomar was one of the eight participants that made their way from the qualifiers into the finals. However, in a disappointing result, Tomar could only manage a seventh-place finish with a score of 147.1. The top two places went to Ai Wen Yu of Chinese Taipei and Zorana Arunovic of Serbia who scored 252.0 and 251.8 points respectively. The gold medal clash saw Arunovic emerge victorious by a 16-4 score.

Mixed 10m Air Pistol Qualification

The qualification round for the Mixed 10m Air Pistol took place on Tuesday as well. Indian pair of Shiva Narwal and Palak performed well to finish third in the rankings with a score of 574. This effort qualifies them for the bronze medal contention. Rhythm Sangwan and Naveen were not as impressive, as they finished eighth with 570 points. Thus, they could not qualify for the finals. 

Mixed 10m Air Rifle Qualification

Over at the Mixed 10m Air Pistol Qualification event, the Indian pair of Mehuli Ghosh and Tushar Mane took the first spot with a 634.3 score. Unfortunately, Elavenil Valarivan and Arjun Babuta could only score 627.8 to finish in the eighth spot. Only the top six teams made it to the finals from the qualification round, which will take place tomorrow.

Women’s Trap Qualification

Day two of the Women’s Trap Qualification was also one of the events on the cards. Post the completion of all five rounds, India’s Neeru was 12th in the rankings with only the top nine athletes moving into the finals. Preeti Rajak came 22nd with a final score of 102. Cui Cui Wu of China went on to win gold in the event.

Men’s Trap Qualification

The second round of qualifications in the Men’s Trap event saw India’s Vivaan Kapoor deliver a sensational performance. He finished third in the qualification with a 122 score, only two short of the top athlete. The 20-year-old took his place in Ranking Match 2 alongside the likes of Valerio Grazini of Italy, Paul Pigorsch of Germany and Ying Qi of China.

Prithviraj Tondaiman was the next best Indian who managed 120 points and took 13th place, missing out on the finals qualification.
