Sindhu wins, Saina, Prannoy out of Singapore Open 2022

The Indian contention ended in all but Women’s singles disciple.

It was a punishing day for the Indian badminton team at the Singapore Open 2022. Aces Saina Nehwal and H.S. Prannoy bowed out in their quarter-finals encounter. Meanwhile, former world champion P.V. Sindhu made it to the semi-final.

The doubles disciplines also witnessed the end of Indian challenge. Men’s doubles pair of Arjun Ramachandran and Dhruv Kapila also crashed in the quarterfinal.

Let us have a look at the results that turned out on the quarterfinals day of the Singapore Open.

PV Sindhu won a punishing battle against Han Yue

Two-time Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu had a thrilling battle against Han Yue of China. The Indian shuttler had to go through a three-game encounter and had almost headed to an upset. In the first game, both the shuttlers started positively but it was Han Yue who had the upper hand right from the beginning. The Chinese shuttler took the first game 21-17.

However, in the second game, Sindhu dominated the entire first half and comfortably pocketed the second game 21-11.

The deciding game was a nail-biter. The Chinese shuttler moved Sindhu all the way and led at 11-9. Han used her exceptional deep court attacks and extended her lead to five more points to 14-9 and it seemed that Sindhu would drop the match.

But, the Indian shuttler made her way and scored seven straight points at 16-14. After a series of up and downs, the score tied at 19-19 and it could’ve been anyone’s game. However, it was Sindhu who secured the match point first.

After a thrilling rally at the match point, Han killed a short lift from Sindhu into the deep-forehand corner which was eventually called in. However, the Indian ace took the review and the shot was found wide of the sideline, securing the match in Sindhu’s favour. The Indian won the match 17-21, 21-11, 21-19.

Later in the day, Saina Nehwal also lost in a thrilling fashion to Aya Ohori of Japan. The former World no.1 started shakily after losing the first game 13-21. However, the former Olympic bronze medalist came back at 21-15. Ohori, who physically had the upper hand in the entire match found it difficult to match the fighting ability of Saina as she trailed for the entire deciding game.

Saina had two match points at 20-18 but the Japanese shuttler held her nerve to score four straight points to steal the match 21-13, 15-21, 22-20. With this defeat, Saina failed to add another feather to her comeback tale.

H.S Prannoy lost to Kodai Naroka

Indian shuttler H.S Prannoy had a disappointing result as he was handed an upset by Kodai Naraoka of Japan. The Indian ace had won the first game 21-12 but crashed in the second game 14-21. In the deciding game, Prannoy won 10 points down 7-17 but made desperate attempts to come back in the match. However, he lost out fighting at 21-12, 14-21, 18-21.

Later in the day, M.R Arjun and Dhruv Kapila and lost to Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia 21-10, 18-21, 17-21.
