Ten records Iga Swiatek can achieve at Wimbledon 2022
The World No. 1 is the favourite to win the Women's Singles title at the Championships.
Iga Swiatek has had a sensational start to the season, especially in the last four months. She has won Tour titles at Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Rome, before taking the Roland Garros title, dropping just one set throughout the tournament, earlier this month.
The Polish player does not have a very good record on grass, having won only four out of eight matches so far. Her best performance in the Wimbledon women's singles was a fourth-round finish that she managed last year, though she did win the girls' singles title at SW19 in 2018.
The World No. 1 will begin her quest for the 2022 Wimbledon title against Croatian qualifier, Jana Fett, on Tuesday. Here are a host of milestones the 21-year-old has in her sight as she gears up for the grass Major.
1: If she reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, Swiatek will remain the only player to make the semifinals or better at all the Grand Slams of 2022.
1: Time Iga Swiatek lost in the first round of a Slam. That came at 2019 Wimbledon to Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic. She is 2-0 against Golubic since.
0: Swiatek hasn’t been the most impressive player on grass, which is not surprising as she doesn’t have a single win over a Top 50 opponent on grass.
5: If Swiatek wins the Wimbledon title, she will become only the fifth woman to win both the girls’ and ladies' titles at SW19. The others in the elusive clue are Ann Haydon-Jones, Karen Susman, Martina Hingis, Amelie Mauresmo and Ashleigh Barty.
5: There are five former Wimbledon girls' champions in this year's draw: Kristen Flipkens (2003), Belinda Bencic (2013), Jelena Ostapenko (2014), Claire Liu (2017) and Iga Swiatek (2018). They are also in contention to join the previously mentioned club.
9: Swiatek is a nine-match win streak against qualifiers, and faces another in Fett at Wimbledon. Her last loss to a qualifier came at the Italian Open in 2020 against Arantxa Rus.
36: Iga Swiatek is currently tied with Venus Williams' 35-match win streak in 2000. A win against Fett in the opening-round win will see Swiatek go past Venus and become the sole owner of the record.
1997: A opening-round win for Swiatek will also make her the first player since Martina Hingis in 1997 to register 36 consecutive wins.
2011: Not since Caroline Wozniacki in 2011 has a player younger than Swiatek was the top seed at Wimbledon. The Polish ace is just 21 years old.
2015: The last time the top seed won the first three Slams of the season was in 2015. A victory for Swiatek at Wimbledon will reset the stat. This season No.1 seeds have both the Majors; Ashleigh Barty at the Australian Open and Iga Swiatek at the French Open.
And here’s one milestone that Swiatek will be eager not to achieve in London this week.
3: The top seed at Wimbledon will want to beat Fett in the first round. She would not want to become the fourth woman to make a first-round exit as the top seed at Wimbledon. Steffi Graf (1994, lost to Lori McNeil) and Martina Hingis (1999 - lost to Virginia Ruano Pascual and 2001 lost to Jelena Dokic) are the only two with that blemish.
