Competing at the Olympics is the highlight of any athlete's career. Some of them make the occasion extra special by grabbing a podium finish. A medal around an athlete's neck with the entire world watching on is what everyone's dreams are made of.

Let's take a look at the athletes who have acquired the most number of bronze medals at the Olympic Games:

10. Takashi Ono - 4 (Japan)

Takashi Ono is considered one of the greatest gymnasts to emerge from Japan. The last time the country had hosted the Games, in 1964, it was Ono who was the host nation's flagbearer.

Ono competed in four editions of the Games, winning four bronze medals. In addition, he also won five gold and four silver medals. In the year 1998, he was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

9. Natalie Coughlin - 5 (USA)

Natalie Coughlin won her first bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics in the 100m freestyle event. Four years later, she won three bronze medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, one each in the 100m freestyle, 200m medley and 4x200m freestyle events. 

Her fifth and final bronze medal came in London, where she finished third in the 4x100m freestyle event.

8. Daniel Revenu - 5 (France)

The French fencer won five bronze medals at the Olympic Games, two in individual events and three in team events. He also won an individual and team bronze medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Four years later, he won another bronze in the Individual Foil event at the 1968 Olympics. Then, at the 1972 Olympic Games and the 1976 Olympics in Munich and Montreal respectively, he won a bronze medal in the Team Foil events.

7. Adrianus de Jong - 5 (Netherlands)

The Dutchman won five bronze medals at the Olympics. The first two came at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Eight years later, in Antwerp, he won two more bronze medals, one each in the individual and the team sabre events. The fencer's fifth and final bronze medal came at the 1924 Paris Olympics, where he finished third in the team sabre event.

6. Antje Buschschulte - 5 (Germany)

Buschschulte won her first bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Four years later, at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, she won her second bronze medal in the 4x200m freestyle event. In the 2004 Athens edition, the versatile swimmer won a bronze each in the 200m backstroke event, 4x100m medley and 4x200m freestyle.

5. Phillip Edwards - 5 (Canada)

Phillip Edwards won his first bronze medal in the 4x400m event at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Four years later, at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, the Canadian runner clinched three more bronze medals, one each in the 800m, 1500m and 4x400m events. He won his fifth and final bronze medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the 800m event.

4. Alexei Nemov - 6 (Russia)

Russian gymnast Nemov first participated in the Olympics at the Atlanta edition, held in 1996. He won three bronze medals in the Olympics, one each in the Floor, High Bar and Pommel Horse events. Four years later, at the Sydney Olympics (2000), he won three more bronze medals, one each in the Team event, Pommel Horse and Parallel Bars.

3. Merlene Ottey - 6 (Jamaica)

The Jamaican sprinter's first bronze came in the 100m event at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Four years later, she won two bronze medals at the 1984 Olympics, one each in the 100m and 200m events.

Ottey's fourth bronze medal came eight years later at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in the 200m event. Four years later, she won her fifth bronze medal at the Atlanta Olympics in the 4x100m relay event. This was followed by her final Olympic bronze medal, which came at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where she finished third in the 100m event.

2. Franziska van Almsick - 6 (Germany)

Van Almsick bagged her first bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games in the 100m freestyle event. Later, in the same edition, she won another bronze medal in 4x100m freestyle. 

Four years later, at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, she won her third bronze in the 4x100m freestyle. Van Almsick's most successful Olympics came in 2004 in Athens, where she won three bronze medals - two in the 4x200m freestyle and one in the 4x100m medley event.

1. Heikki Savolainen - 6 (Finland)

Savolainen first competed at the quadrennial event in the 1928 edition held in Amsterdam. The Finnish gymnast won a bronze medal in the Pommel horse event. Four years later, in Los Angeles, he had a series of successes, winning three bronze medals, each in the individual all-around, parallel bars and team all-around events. 

In the following edition in Berlin in 1936, Savolainen won a bronze medal in the team all-around event. World War II meant that the Olympic Games were halted in between. However, 16 years later in 1952, Savolainen was back to win his sixth and final bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympic Games. Overall, his six bronze medals were won in a span of 20 years, making him one of the most durable gymnasts of all time.
