Indian Sports Calendar in 2023: Major events to watch in fourth week of May

Indian men's hockey team will resume their Pro League campaign under new head coach Craig Fulton.

A lot of sporting events are lined up for the upcoming week of the Indian sports calendar. After a break of few months the men's hockey team will be back in action playing alongside Belgium and Great Britain in the FIH Pro League. Indian tennis men's doubles pair Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni will be playing the final tournament ahead of the Rolland Garros.

Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (May 22-28 May) in the Indian sports calendar.

Football

Next Gen Cup

The final games of the group stages will finish on May 23 with the knockouts set to be held on May 25th. Top youth teams from Premier League (West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Everton FC) are taking part in the Next Gen Cup.

May 21-28: Lyon Open (ATP 250)

Men’s Doubles - Yuki Bhambri/Saketh Myneni

After a dismal performance last week at the Challenger 175 Bordeaux, Yuki-Saki pair is set to take part in ATP 250 Lyon Open which will serve as a pre-cursor event for Rolland Garros.

May 21-28: Skopje Challenger (ATP)

Top seed Sumit Nagal is set to take on Ramkumar Ramanathan in the opening round of the Skopje Challenger qualifiers. Apart from the singles, three Indian pairs (including foreigner Margaroli) are part of the doubles set-up this week.

The second grand slam of the year is set to start from 28th May (Main Draw). Top Indian players - Rohan Bopanna, Yuki Bhambri, Saketh Myneni, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, and Sriram Balaji have made it to the main draw of the men's doubles.

Badminton

May 23-28: Malaysia Masters

After a below-average performance from India at the recently concluded Sudirman Cup, the action shifts to the east of Asia (Malaysia). All the top Indian shuttlers in the men’s and women’s sections are set to take part in the event (part of the Paris Olympic qualification cycle). India’s no. 2 women’s singles player Saina Nehwal will be back in action this week.

After a break of two months, the Indian men’s hockey team will begin its journey in Europe and is set to take on Belgium and Great Britain on the 26th and 27th of May, 2023.

India is placed alongside Pakistan in Group A. The tournament serves as the Asian qualifier for the 2023 FIH men's hockey world cup.

May 23-1 June: Men's Junior Asia Cup 2023

The Hockey Men's Junior Asia Cup will take place in Salalah, Oman. India have been placed in Pool A along with nemesis Pakistan, Japan, Thailand, and Chinese Taipei. India have travelled for the championships with an 18-member squad.

May 25 - 03 June - Khelo India University Games

The third edition of the Khelo India University Games 2023 will feature around 4,000 athletes from around 200 universities from across the country. The Games will be held across four cities in Uttar Pradesh - Lucknow, Varanasi, Greater Noida and Gorakhpur.
