Tennis legend Serena Williams has won the prestigious award a record four times from five nominations.

Aitana Bonmatí was named World Sportswoman of the Year at the recent Laureus Awards 2024. This achievement caps off an exceptional year for the Catalan midfielder. Having secured every major trophy with FC Barcelona, including the league and the Champions League, she has now made history as the first footballer to win the women’s award at the Laureus ceremony.

The Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award is given to the female athlete who has accomplished the most outstanding achievement in her sport during the preceding calendar year. The award was initially presented in 2000 and has since grown to become one of the most prominent sports honors in the world, honoring the achievements of athletes across various disciplines.

A panel comprised of global sports journalists selects the candidates for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award, with the winner being ultimately determined by votes from members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, an association of sporting icons who accomplished the highest level of excellence in their respective sports.

Tennis legends Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova, skier Lindsey Vonn, gymnasts Simone Biles and Nadia Comaneci have all won the honor. These athletes have all shown outstanding skill, sportsmanship, and dedication to their sport, encouraging future generations of female athletes.
