Manu Bhaker and Jyothi Yarraji will spearhead the Indian contingent in the competition.

FISU World University Games 2023, Chengdu kicked off with great pomp and fervor on July 28 at the Dong'an Lake Sports Park Stadium. This biennial multi-sport extravaganza which was previously known as the Universiade has a rich history dating back to 1959 and India has been actively participating since its inception.

The ongoing edition is the 31st Summer Universiade with university students from across the globe showcasing their athletic prowess. India's 227-member contingent is being led by star hurdler Jyothi Yarraji and Olympian shooter Manu Bhaker.

They will be joined by other prominent athletes like judoka Tulika Maan, sharpshooters Divyansh Singh Panwar, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Elavenil Valarivan, Chinki Yadav and Yashaswini Singh Deswal as well as national record-holding sprinter Amlan Borgohain, race walker Priyanka Goswami and swimmer Srihari Nataraj among others.

The event was originally scheduled for 2021 but was postponed due to the global pandemic. Now, with proper safety measures in place, the World University Games will see archery and water polo events commencing a day earlier on July 27. The grand closing ceremony is set to be held on August 8 at the enchanting Chengdu Open Air Music Park.

A total of 269 medals will be up for grabs in Chengdu, with 50 in athletics and 42 in swimming making it one of the largest multi-sport events in the world. India's past performances in the Games has been commendable with the country's best showing coming in 2015, when they secured five medals — including one gold, one silver and three bronze medals. In the last edition held in Naples in 2019, India added four medals to their tally including one gold, one silver and two bronze.

While the 12-member wushu team faced visa issues and had to be withdrawn from the event, one can be hopeful that the rest of the Indian contingent is determined to shine in various disciplines.
