Indian Premier League tops the list.

The year 2023 has been fruitful for sports enthusiasts, with many sporting events taking place across the globe. Several games have seen a massive surge in interest, with fans eagerly following their favorite teams and players. The Indian Premier League (IPL) was one such event that garnered a lot of attention in India. Other notable events include the Cricket World Cup, Asia Cup, Women’s Premier League, Asian Games, and Indian Super League (ISL).

Many sports events that India competed in increased the number of Google searches. One of them was the Asian Games 2023, where the Indian athletes showed their skills and won many medals. The Indian sports lovers were thrilled by their achievements. Another event that attracted a lot of attention was the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup where the hosts finished finalists.

Here are the top 10 most googled sports events in 2023 in India

10. SA T20

SA T20 is the 10th most searched sporting event in India. SA 20 stands for South Africa Twenty20, which is a new franchise-based T20 cricket league that started in January 2023. The new cricket league featured six teams which was popular and competitive, with many exciting matches and performances. Eastern Cape became the first South African team to win the SA 20 title. Several franchises from IPL are part of the league adding larger Indian viewership.

9. Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup

The Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 was the eighth edition in the T20 World Cup history. It was held in South Africa from 10 February to 26 February 2023. The tournament featured 10 teams, who competed in a round-robin format followed by knockout stages. The final was played at Cape Town, where Australia defeated South Africa by 19 runs to win their sixth and third consecutive title in this format.

India was one of the top contenders for the title, led by captain Harmanpreet. They won three out of their four matches in the group stage. However, they lost to Australia in the semi-final by 5 runs, despite a valiant fightback from Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh.

8. The Ashes

The Ashes 2023 was a five-match test series between England and Australia, played in June and July 2023. The series was part of the 2023 – 2025 ICC World Test Championship, and the venues were Edgbaston, Lord’s, Headingley, Old Trafford, and The Oval.

The result was a 2–2 draw, with Australia retaining the Ashes (having won in 2021–22). The series was closely contested and sometimes acrimonious, as both teams displayed different styles of play. England introduced the aggressive ‘Bazball’ style of play, which involved playing fast and attacking cricket. Australia relied on their world-class bowling attack and their resilience to bounce back from setbacks.

7. Pakistan Super League

Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023 was a riveting tournament that saw eight teams vying for the championship. The Lahore Qalandars clinched their second title by defeating the Multan Sultans in a nail-biting final match. The Qalandars’ captain, Shaheen Afridi was a standout performer in the final, scoring 44 runs and capturing four wickets.

The PSL, aimed at promoting cricket in Pakistan and showcasing international talent, consisted of a group stage and playoffs. The top four teams from the group stage moved on to the playoffs, culminating in the grand final. The tournament was a testament to the cricketing talent in Pakistan and around the world and is expected to grow in popularity in the coming years.

6. Indian Super League

Indian Super League 2023 was the ninth edition of the top division of Indian football. It started on 7 October 2022 and ended on 18 March 2023 with the final played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.

The league stage consisted of 20 matches for each team, with three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. The final was played between Bengaluru FC and Mohun Bagan with the latter defeating the former in the penalty shootout 2-2 (4-3). It was Mohan Bagan’s first Championship title while Mumbai City won their second League Winners Shield.

5. Asian Games

Asian Games 2023 was the 19th edition of the quadrennial extravaganza held in Hangzhou, China from 23 September to 8 October 2023. India had a remarkable performance by winning a record 107 medals – 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze medals. This surpassed India’s previous record tally of 70 medals from the previous edition in Jakarta in 2018.

India finished fourth in the overall medal standings, behind China, Japan, and South Korea. Furthermore, India secured six Olympic quotas for Paris 2024 in various sports.

4. Women’s Premier League

The inaugural edition of Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, a T20 cricket league, was held in March. The final saw Mumbai Indians clinch their first title by defeating Delhi Capitals. Key performances included Nat Sciver-Brunt’s unbeaten 60 and Harmanpreet Kaur’s 37. Meg Lanning and Radha Yadav were the top scorers for Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians respectively.

3. Asia Cup

The Asia Cup 2023 was the 16th edition of the men’s cricket tournament, held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka from August 30th to September 17th. The tournament featured six teams: Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Nepal. The teams were divided into two groups of three teams each and played a round-robin format followed by Super Four matches.

India won the tournament by defeating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the final at Colombo on the back of Mohammad Siraj’s outstanding spell. Kuldeep Yadav was named the player of the series for his all-round performance. Shubman Gill was the leading run-scorer with 302 runs in six matches, while Matheesha Pathirana turned out to be the leading wicket-taker with 11 wickets in six matches.

2. Men’s Cricket World Cup

The 2023 Cricket World Cup was the 13th edition of the tournament, held in India from 5 October to 19 November. Australia won the title by defeating India by six wickets in the final in Ahmedabad. Travis Head scored a brilliant century and was named the Player of the Match.

India had a strong run in the tournament but fell short in the end. Overall, the tournament featured 10 teams. with India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand qualifying for the semifinals.

1. Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League 2023 was the 16th season of the Indian Premier League, a franchise Twenty20 cricket league in India. The league returned to its original home-and-away format after four years. Final match was played between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans on May 29, 2023, at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad 23.

Chennai Super Kings clinched their fifth title after beating home team Gujarat Giants in DL method.
