Argentina managed a draw against India in their second match at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Monday.
The most successful hockey team at the Olympics: the Indian men’s hockey team, will be hungry for more, as they compete for glory at the Paris Olympics 2024.
They had won a told of 12 medals (8 golds, 1 silver, 3 bronze) from 1928 to 1980. This includes six gold medals in a row from 1928 to 1956, followed by two more in 1964 and 1980. They won the silver in 1960 at Rome. The bronze medals were secured in 1968, 1972 and 2020.
With astroturf being introduced in hockey, the Indian team suffered a drought. Infact, they weren’t able win a medal for 41 years, until Manpreet Singh and Co. clinched the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Just like the previous edition, India will not be the favourites to finish at the top of the podium. However, they surely can be listed among a number of teams, who are favourites to clinch a medal at the showpiece event.
The Harmanpreet Singh-led team will be tested upfront, as they have been placed in Pool B with giants like Australia and Belgium. Argentina, New Zealand and Ireland make up the remainder of the group.
However, India should be confident about qualifying for the quarter-finals. If they peak at the right time, they have the potential to go further ahead.
They have a plethora of experience, with as many as 11 players from the bronze medal-winning squad at Tokyo, making the cut for the 16-member squad at Paris. Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and midfielder Manpreet Singh will be playing their fourth consecutive Olympic Games!
With five players making their Olympic debut, India will be confident that they have the right balance of experience and youth.
Although India are placed a rung below them in the rankings, they have had a good head-to-head record against the South American side, both overall and in recent times. Infact, Argentina haven’t been able to taste success against the Indians in their last five meetings.
The Asian side reigned supreme against Argentina 3-1 at the Tokyo Olympics. Infact, at the Rio 2016 edition, India were the only side to have defeated Argentina, who eventually went on to win gold.
The Paris Olympics 2024 second group B match saw India pulling out a last minute miracle for a draw against Argentina. The Craig Fulton-coached side will hope to improve their chances in the upcoming group matches at Paris.
