Top five Indian sportspersons who have tournaments named after them

Till now, many Indian sportspersons have had tournaments named after them in their honour.

Few athletes enjoy illustrious careers, while some make their sport great. From the Indian cricket team’s triumph in the 1983 ICC World Cup to Neeraj Chopra‘s gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, athletes have created and annihilated multiple sporting records and milestones.

At times, awards are given the names of these stars. Meanwhile, at a few junctures, competitions are created with their names as an emblem of their greatness. In this article, we will take a look at the top five sportspersons who have tournaments named after them.

5. Jeev Milkha Singh

The Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational Golf Tournament, started last decade, is a special invitational golf tournament named after Jeev Milkha Singh. One of the biggest names on the Indian golf scene, Jeev Milkha Singh has established himself as one of the biggest names in the country’s sporting history.

4. Syed Modi

The Syed Modi International Badminton is named after former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Syed Modi. He also won a bronze medal in the men’s singles event at the 1982 Asian Games, which took place in India, in addition to three international titles.

Unfortunately, Modi’s career came to a tragic end in July 1988, after he was shot dead in Lucknow. After his unfortunate death, a memorial tournament was started in his name. The tournament underwent multiple changes, and it’s currently a Super 300-level tournament on the BWF World Tour.

3. Neeraj Chopra

The Neeraj Chopra Classic is scheduled to be held on May 24 at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, Haryana. It’s named after two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, who’s also expected to participate in the tournament.

World Athletics has confirmed that the event will bear the Gold Category meet, which makes it a crucial qualifier for the World Championships.

2. Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji

Named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji, the Duleep Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket tournament played between teams representing geographical regions of India. The tournament was founded in 1961 and has been held regularly ever since.

Duleepsinhji played cricket before the establishment of the Indian cricket team. As a result, he played first-class cricket and also represented the Britons.

1. Ranjitsinhji

The biggest domestic cricket event in India, the Ranji Trophy, is named after Ranjitsinhji. Like Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji, Ranjitsinhji also represented England during his cricketing career. He played first-class cricket for Sussex.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) founded this championship in 1934. Since then the tournament has been held in various states.
