IOC asks Indian Olympic Association to get house in order before considering hosting Olympic Games: Report

IOC highlights governance and transparency issues in Indian Olympic Association that may affect India’s 2036 Olympic bid.
The Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) operations have drawn criticism from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a move that could significantly impact India’s future bid to host the Olympic Games.
According to an Indian Express report, the IOC has expressed its dissatisfaction with the current administrative structure and functioning of the IOA. They highlighted three critical areas that require immediate improvement.
Key issues raised by the IOC
Governance Inconsistencies: The IOC has identified procedural and structural flaws in the IOA, raising concerns about internal decision-making processes, leadership changes, and the makeup of the committee.
Financial and Operational Transparency: The international organization has expressed concerns about the IOA’s financial operations, citing ambiguous funding distribution criteria and imprecise athlete selection and representation.
Non-Adherence to Olympic Charter: The IOC has issued a warning that many of the IOA’s actions and choices may conflict with the Olympic Charter, which serves as the basis for all National Olympic Committees. This is arguably the most serious accusation.
Threat to 2036 Olympic bid
India has been positioning itself as a potential host for the 2036 Summer Olympics, with Ahmedabad proposed as a possible venue. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed a strong intent to bring the Games to India. However, if prompt remedial action is not taken, the IOC’s concerns could negatively impact India’s reputation as a host country.
According to sources, the IOC has directly expressed these concerns and anticipates prompt, observable reforms. If these problems are not resolved promptly, the IOA may be suspended, or hosting rights for upcoming IOC events may be revoked.
The sports community reacts
The changes in the Indian sports world have created a stir. The IOA urgently needs reform, according to prominent athletes and experts. There are growing calls for greater player representation, external audits, and transparency.
Now that India’s Olympic aspirations are on the line, the IOA has the upper hand.
