LA 2028 Olympics: Badminton among 31 sports confirmed for Los Angeles

Badminton made its debut as an Olympic medal sport in Barcelona in 1992.

Badminton is included in the Olympic Games program for the 10th consecutive time. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed badminton as one of 31 sports for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Badminton will continue to have five medal events – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, with a total quota of 172 athletes (86 male and 86 female).

Badminton made its debut as an Olympic medal sport in Barcelona in 1992 and has been a part of every Olympics since. Only four medal events were held in badminton at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, but from the next Olympics, all five events were held.

The event programme and athlete quotas for LA 2028 were approved by the IOC Executive Board on Wednesday 9 April. There are 351 medal events, 22 more than at Paris 2024.

For the first time in history, all team sports will have at least the same number of women’s teams as men’s teams. Gender equality was a key consideration when deciding on the athlete quota and the number of events. Out of 351 events, there are 161 women’s events, 165 men’s events, and 25 mixed events.

The IOC Executive Board followed the recommendation from the Olympic Programme Commission and the principles approved in 2023, which specified that the Games should be gender-equal, globally appealing, cost and complexity-conscious, and athlete-focused.
