LA Olympics 2028 full schedule out, look at potential key dates for Indian contingent

The schedule has been released exactly three years prior to the Opening Ceremony.

The full schedule for LA Olympics 2028 was released by the Organizing Committee via a post on the official handle on X (formerly Twitter), on Monday. The Opening Ceremony is set to be held on July 14, exactly three years from now. Interestingly, it was earlier announced that the event will be co-hosted by the SoFi Stadium and the LA Memorial Coliseum.

Los Angeles, which was formally awarded the Games at the 131st IOC Session in Lima in 2017, becomes the third city after London and Paris to host the Summer Olympics thrice, having done so previously in 1932 and 1984.

A total of 36 sports will be played out in the sporting extravaganza lasting more than two weeks, with the Closing Ceremony slated to be conducted on 30th July at the Coliseum.

A very interesting change to note is that the track and field competitions will be held at the start of the showpiece, from July 15 to 24 in the Coliseum. Meanwhile, swimming has been reserved for the latter part (July 22 to 30 in the Inglewood Zone). This is contrary to how the scheduling was done in the last few editions.

Cricket makes a return, after having been played only once, way back in 1900. Set to be a six-team affair, the women’s section will be held from 12th July to 20th July at the Fairgrounds Cricket Stadium. The men are set to play their first match on 22nd July, with the medal matches on 29th July.

Squash, which makes its Olympic debut, has the same dates as the athletics event and will be conducted in the Universal City Squash Centre.

Wrestling, which has contributed most number of medals to India’s tally since the Beijing 2008 edition, will be played out from 24th July to 30th July at the LA Convention Centre Hall 2.

Meanwhile, the sport of shooting, which contributed three of India’s six medals at the Paris 2024 Games, will be held right from Day 1 till 25th July, at the Long Beach Target Shooting Hall.

Field hockey begins two days before the Opening Ceremony and will continue till a day before the Closing Ceremony at the Carson Field, while boxing too is set to go on for the entirety of the quadrennial competition and will be co-hosted by the Peacock Theatre and the OTLA Arena.

Badminton is slated to be played at the Galen Center from July 15 to 24. Archery, where India suffered two heartbreaking fourth place finishes at Paris, will begin July 12 and continue until July 28 at the Carson Stadium.

Among other sports with India focus, table tennis will be held at the LA Convention Centre Hall 3 from Day 1 to the penultimate day while tennis begins four days later on July 19 and ends on 28th July.

While three years is a gigantic duration, one can expect most athletes to have had a look at the dates and made a mental note of the same, motivating themselves accordingly.
