Samuel Duvall is the oldest USA athlete to win a medal at the Olympics.

The Olympics has not only been the stage for records and rivalries but also inspiration. There have been athletes who have shown extreme determination and will to succeed. One of those athletes is Samuel Duvall who is the oldest American Olympic medallist.

He was 68 years and 194 days old when he won the silver medal in Archery under men’s team round at the 1904 St. Louis Olympic Games. Duvall was part of the Cincinnati archers’ team and partnered with Charles Woodruff, William Clark, Charles Hubbard.

The Cincinnati archers scored 1,341 points as Duvall contributed 280 points. The team missed the gold medal by three points as Potomac Archers won the gold. Boston archers came third with 1,268 points and Chicago archers were placed fourth with 942 points.

Samuel Duvall competed in two events at the 1904 St. Louis Olympic Games. He took part in the men’s team round and Double American Round, Men where he was placed 14th. Duvall only took part in the Olympics once.

He was born on 11 March 1836 in Liberty, Indiana and passed away in 1908 on 26 September. His story continues to be a part of Olympic history for USA.

He is the second oldest American to take part in the summer games. Thomas Scott was 71 years old while competing alongside Duvall in Double American Round and Double York Round at 1904 St. Louis.

Samuel Duvall’s benchmark is yet to be challenged by athletes of USA

Samuel Duvall’s record has never really been challenged in recent times. There were over seven athletes from the USA who were 60 years and above during the 1904 St. Louis Olympics.

But over the past few decades, there have not been many athletes at Duvall’s with Olympic medals. The recent record was of Steffen Peters who was 56 years old during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Peters won the silver medal in Equestrian, team dressage.

Duvall’s landmark achievement has successfully withstood the test of time. There may be American athletes who are older than Duvall at the Olympics, but to win a medal is what sets him apart from the rest. USA can try beating Duvall’s record in the upcoming editions of the Olympics.
