Manu Bhaker at the Paris Olympics 2024 became the first Indian women to win a medal in shooting.

Shooting has been part of the Summer Olympics since the first edition in 1896 at Athens. Among many sporting disciplines, Shooting has provided India with many landmark victories.

The Indian shooting contingent has always produced world class athletes. But the sport had been evading Indian success at the Summer Games till the 20th century. Over the past two decades Indian shooters have made sure of their presence on the podium.

India has seen shooters providing a tough contest to each other during the Olympic trials. It is a sign that the nation will see more medals in shooting.

Let’s have a look at the medals India has so far won in shooting at the Summer Games.

Shooting medals won by India at the Olympics

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore – Silver medal, Athens 2004

India’s shooting reign began in 2004 during the Athens Olympics. Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was in fine form before competing at Athens in Men’s double trap. His form dipped in the qualification rounds as he finished fifth with a score of 135.

In the final, Rathore brought out his best with a score of 44 to bring his tally to 179. He became the first individual silver medallist from India since independence. It also marked the first medal for the nation in shooting. At 34 years, 6 months and 19 days, he remains the oldest Olympic individual medal winner for India.

Abhinav Bindra – Gold medal, Beijing 2008

Abhinav Bindra will always be remembered for his valiant efforts during the Beijing 2008 Olympics. He had broken the Olympic record in 10m air rifle during the qualification rounds at Athens in 2004. Bindra showed his levels of perseverance four years later at Beijing.

Bindra was placed fourth in the qualification rounds at Beijing with a score of 596. In the final he scored 104.5 which was well above silver medallist, Zhu Qinan who scored 102.7. Bindra received the gold medal with an overall score of 700.5. He became the first athlete from India to win an Individual Olympic gold medal.

Gagan Narang – Bronze medal, London 2012

Gagan Narang had already been an established shooter in the shooting arena. He had already won several gold medals at the Commonwealth games and championships. Narang was looking for Olympic glory at London in the 10m air rifle.

He finished third in the qualification with a score of 598. Narang carried the momentum into the finals with a score of 103.1 and a total of 701.1 for the bronze medal. It was India’s first medal the 2012 London Olympics.

Vijaykumar Veer – Silver medal, London 2012

Former subedar in the Army, Vijay Kumar had found success at the Commonwealth games and Asian games. But an Olympic win was what Kumar was looking for in his only summer games participation at London 2012 in the 25m rapid fire pistol.

In the qualification rounds, he finished fourth with a score of 585. In the final, precision under pressure rewarded Kumar with a silver medal with a score of 30.

Manu Bhaker- Bronze medal, Paris 2024

Manu Bhaker was competing in her second summer games at Paris Olympics 2024. She had a heartbreaking outing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Bhaker was looking for redemption in Paris. In the qualification rounds of women’s 10m air pistol, Bhaker finished third with a score of 580.

She became the first Indian woman shooter to qualify for an Olympic final since Suma Shirur at the 2004 Athens Olympics. In the final, the 22-year-old secured the bronze medal with a score of 221.7.

She is the youngest Indian shooter to win an Olympic medal so far and the third youngest Indian Olympic Individual medallist after PV Sindhu at Rio in 2016 and Saina Nehwal at London in 2012.

Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh- Bronze medal, Paris 2024

Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh won the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. She became the first Indian since indepedence to win multiple medals at the summer games. Meanwhile Sarabjot Singh became the youngest male athlete to win a medal at the Olympics.

Swapnil Kusale- Bronze medal, Paris 2024

Swapnil Kusale won bronze in men’s 50m rifle three positions shooting event at Paris Olympics 2024. He made a brilliant run in the final which saw him make a jump from sixth place to third place.
