Carlos Alcaraz will aim to win a medal for Spain, at his debut Olympic Games.
Less than two months after clinching his first-ever French Open title, Carlos Alcaraz will make a return to the Roland Garros Stadium. This time he will be in the Spanish colors, aiming to finish at the top of the podium at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The second seed has a relatively comfortable match in the first round, as he goes up against World No. 275 Lebanese Hady Habib.
Earlier this month, he completed the Channel Slam, defending his Wimbledon crown successfully. He defeated Novak Djokovic in the final in straight sets. His stroke play was stunning, and there were multiple instances where the Serb legend looked clueless.
Habib gained an unexpected entry into the competition, with numerous withdrawals having taken place. With a career-high ranking of 259 and having played just one ATP match, he would probably have a dream-come-true moment when he goes up against the second seed at the iconic arena.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Hady Habib Preview
Carlos Alcaraz is currently having the time of his life, having picked up his fourth Grand Slam title. Many have already projected him to be a future great of the game. He started off his clay season earlier this year on a very shaky note. He withdrew from the Monte Carlo Masters, the Barcelona Open and the Italian Open, apart from losing in the quarterfinal at Madrid.
Although there were doubts regarding how far he could progress at Roland Garros, he was at his best in Paris. He advanced to the semifinals without much ado. In the semifinal, he defeated Italy’s Jannik Sinner in a thrilling five-setter. In the final against Alexander Zverev, he came back from being 1-2 down to lift his first-ever French Open title
Moving on to the grass season, he lost in the second round at the Queen’s Club Championships. However, he again brought out his A-game at the grass court Major. He picked up the SW19 title for the second year in a row. He had to contend with the likes of Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Danii Medvedev, before eventually meeting Novak Djokovic in the final.
He didn’t play any clay tournament ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics. It will be interesting to see how quickly he can adjust to the change in conditions. His opponent for the first round, Hady Habib was born in Houston, USA, and also did a degree in Sports Management from Texas A&M University.
However, he started representing Lebanon at the Davis Cup in 2015. He has an impressive 15-5 win-loss record in singles at the tournament. He has played only one match on the ATP tour (a three-set defeat to Czech Jiri Vesely in Dubai in February 2022). Generally, he competes in Challengers events.
With the stark difference in quality, the Lebanese player will find it very difficult to put up a challenge, against arguably the best player on the tennis circuit currently. However, there have been numerous instances of matches against top players, helping unfancied players to improve their game. The 25-year-old must look at this match as a huge learning curve.
Alcaraz and Habib will also play men’s doubles at the Olympics. Alcaraz will team up with the legendary Rafael Nadal. Meanwhile, Habib will be playing alongside Benjamin Hassan.

Prediction
Carlos Alcaraz is arguably the favorite to win the gold medal, followed by first seed Novak Djokovic (World No. 1 Jannik Sinner pulled out of the tournament due to tonsilitis). He has an all-round game, suited for every kind of court. Former World No.1 Mats Wilander had declared that Alcaraz has the “greatest forehand of all time”. That, combined with his disguised drop shot, makes him exceptionally lethal.
Meanwhile, Hady Habib also has a well-rounded game. However, he might struggle to match the pace of Alcaraz in the first-round fixture.
The match will provide an opportunity for Habib, to make the world take notice of him and his game if he manages to trouble the Spanish star.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in straight sets.
