Vinesh Phogat was the star performer of the day for the Indian contingent.
The 6th of August was a big day for the Indian contingent at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 in France. Vinesh Phogat was in action in the wrestling 50kg freestyle category. She was up against Japan’s Yui Sasaki, who was the top seed and had not lost a contest in the last five years.
However, the Indian wrestler has proved to be defiant in the face of adversaries on and off the mat. In what was the biggest upset of the wrestling discipline, Vinesh Phogat beat the Japanese wrestler and won her subsequent clashes in the quarter-final and the semi-final to secure a place in the final. By doing so, Phogat has ensured a silver medal minimum or gold if she wins the final bout.
India’s best hope for gold medal at Paris Olympics 2024, Neeraj Chopra was also in action in men’s javelin throw qualification. He cruised into the final with a massive 89.34m throw in his very first attempt, making a huge statement and showcasing his readiness to defend his title.
The 26-year-old is looking sharp and ought to be amongst the medals when the final takes place. Over in the table tennis discipline, the Indian men’s team was outplayed by China and were eliminated from the competition.
Eyes were also on the Indian men’s hockey team that faced Germany in the semi-final. A win would have assured a place in the final and a medal for the country after a bronze four years ago in Tokyo Olympics. However, once again India will have to contend with a bronze if they manage to beat Spain on August 8 (Thursday) following a 2-3 loss in the semis.
