Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra will play the javelin throw final on Thursday.

India’s campaign at Paris Olympics 2024 suffered their biggest setback as wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified ahead of her gold medal match in the women’s 50kg Freestyle event. A news that shocked all over India said that Vinesh was overweight by 100 grams which ruled her out of contention for the finals.

Because she contested in a category that was lower than her usual weight, this increase was bound to happen. The management was prepared for it and the team along with Vinesh worked all through the night to reduce the weight but they couldn’t manage to do it as the grappler was stripped of her medal opportunity.

In the 53kg category, which was the usual weight of Vinesh, Antim Panghal represented India but was beaten 0-10 in the first round. India would want to change their fortunes on Day 13 (August 8) and here are India’s best medal contenders who could do it.

Hockey – Men’s Team – Bronze Medal Match (5:30 PM)

The Indian men’s hockey team will take on Spain in the bronze medal match on Thursday. A tough loss against Germany meant that India’s wait to regain the Olympic gold will not be achieved in Paris 2024. India took an early lead thanks to Harmanpreet Singh. But the Germans struck back twice to take the lead. Thanks to Sukhjeet and Harmanpreet, India equaled the score.

With six minutes to go, a reverse flick and a deflection from Marko Milktau sealed the game for Germany 3-2. A disappointing result but India will look to defend their bronze medal which they won in Tokyo. It was against Germany that India won the bronze medal by beating them 5-4 in Tokyo. India would want to overcome the Spanish challenge to restore some happiness in the Indian camp.

Athletics – Javelin Throw – Neeraj Chopra (11:55 PM)

If there is one athlete from the Indian contingent of the Paris Olympics whose plan has gone on to perfection, then that is Neeraj Chopra. The reigning Olympic Champion cleared all the doubters with a season-best throw of 89.34m to finish at the top of the qualification charts. The Indian fans were happy to see him in full flow after injury concerns arose in May with the news of him suffering from an adductor injury.

The 26-year-old made Antalya in Turkey his preparation base for the marquee event. During the recuperation process, he made his presence felt in three events leading up to Paris. All doubts were shattered with his first throw in the Stade de France arena which showed how prepared he was.

It is gonna be a tough final with the likes of Grenada’s Anderson Peters, and Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejich possessing tough challenges. The event also has an Indo-Pak flavor with Arshad Nadeem in the fray as well.
