Paris Olympics 2024: Who are India’s medal contenders today, August 4 (Day 9)?

India’s boxing contingent is targeting its first medal of Paris Olympics 2024.
It was another thrilling day for India as it came close to creating history only to fell short by margins at Paris Olympics 2024. Manu Bhaker came tantalizingly close winning a historic third Olympic medal but finished fourth as she lost in the third-place shoot-off in women’s 25m pistol event.
In archery, the medal contention has come to an end as it witnessed a shoot-off and a heartbreak with the 18-year-old Bhajan Kaur shooting an eight, when 10 was required in the shootout. Kaur lost to Diananda Choirunisa of Indonesia in the 1/8 elimination round.
It was down to the experienced Deepika Kumari, who was competing in her fourth Olympics. She beat Germany’s Michelle Kroppen in the pre-quarters, but she couldn’t get past South Korea’s Suhyeon Nam in the quarterfinals just like in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. India will be hoping to make amends and here are some of the medal opportunities India could capitalize on.

Medals contenders for India on Day 9 (August 4) at Paris Olympics 2024
Shooting – Women’s Skeet Event – Raiza Dhillon & Maheswari Chauhan (1:00 PM)
While India tasted success in Rifle and Pistol events, shooters in the Skeet event haven’t been able to replicate it. Raiza Dhillon and Maheshwari Chauhan have a chance to rewrite it as they will be shooting for a spot in the finals, which will be held later in the day.
With scores of 21, 22, and 23, Raiza stands in 25th place, but Maheswari with 71 points is ahead of her countrymate in the 8th place. With half a century of shots remaining, Maheswari would want to hit them all and make it to the finals. Only top-six shooters make it to the finals and if she can hit 50, she could be on the verge of history in the medal round at 7 PM (IST).
Boxing – Women’s 75kg – Lovlina Borgohain (3:02 PM)
Lovlina Borgohain will take on China’s Li Qian in the quarterfinals of the women’s 75kg category in Boxing. A win in the quarterfinals would confirm another medal for India. In combat sports such as Boxing, both the losing semifinalists are given the bronze medal as they have less time to recover and fight for a bronze medal bout.
Lovlina had won bronze in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and would want to go aim higher this time. While the 26-year-old had an easy win in the pre-quarters, she will have a huge task of facing the top-seeded Chinese boxer.
Both these Boxers fought each other twice last year with the Li Qian winning the Asian Games Final while the Indian won the World Championships semis. Qian had won bronze in Rio in 2016 and four years later clinched the silver at Tokyo. Lovlina will hope to end her Olympic medal winning streak at North Paris Arena.
