Aman Sehrawat added India’s sixth medal on day 14.

India’s Olympic campaign saw mixed results on August 9 at the Paris Olympics 2024 Games. Wrestler Aman Sehrawat, 21, secured the country’s sixth medal, clinching bronze in a hard-fought repechage bout against Puerto Rico’s Darian Toi Cruz. Despite a minor nose bleed, Sehrawat’s aggressive strategy paid off.

In athletics, both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams were eliminated in the heats, marking the end of India’s track and field events. Golfers Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar struggled in Round 3, slipping down the leaderboard.

Meanwhile, wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s upcoming CAS verdict could potentially add to India’s medal tally. If successful, it might double the country’s wrestling medals at these Games.

On August 9, India contested only one medal at the Paris Olympics, resulting in a successful outcome for the nation. Wrestler Aman Sehrawat competed in the bronze medal match of the men’s freestyle 57kg category, securing India’s sixth medal at these Games.

The 21-year-old Sehrawat faced Puerto Rico’s Darian Toi Cruz in a gripping contest. Despite a challenging start, Sehrawat showed resilience, ultimately winning the bout with a convincing score of 13-5.

Sehrawat became the sixth male wrestler from the country to win an Olympic medal. His achievement adds to India’s growing legacy in Olympic wrestling, following in the footsteps of past medalists like KD Jadhav, Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, Ravi Dahiya, and Bajrang Punia.

Sehrawat’s journey to the bronze included impressive wins in earlier rounds, though he faced a setback in the semi-final against Japan’s top-seeded Rei Higuchi.

What to expect from Indian contingent on Day 15, 10 August ?

On Day 15 of the Paris Olympics, August 10, India’s focus narrows to a handful of athletes in two events. The spotlight will be on wrestler Reetika Hooda, competing in the women’s 76kg freestyle category. Hooda has the potential to secure India’s seventh medal if she reaches the final. Even a semi-final loss would keep India’s hopes alive for the Games’ final day through the repechage round.

Additionally, golfers will continue their pursuit on the course, though their chances for podium finishes appear slim based on current standings.

This penultimate day could mark the conclusion of India’s Olympic campaign if Hooda doesn’t advance to medal rounds or repechage. However, a strong performance could extend India’s medal hopes into the closing day of the Olympics on August 11.
