This is Indonesia’s largest contingent in 20 years.

Indonesia is gearing up for a strong showing at the Paris Olympics in 2024, with 29 athletes set to represent the country. This team of 16 men and 13 women marks Indonesia’s largest Olympic contingent since 2004.

Indonesia has a long history at the Olympics, first competing in 1952. They’ve participated in every Summer Games since, except for 1964 and 1980 due to political reasons. The country has never competed in the Winter Olympics.

Over the years, Indonesia has won 37 Olympic medals, including eight gold, 14 silver and 15 bronze. Badminton has been their most successful sport, accounting for 21 of these medals. Weightlifting has also been strong, bringing in 15 medals. Their first Olympic medal came in archery at the 1988 Seoul Games.

The 1992 Barcelona Olympics was a milestone for Indonesia, with their first gold medals in badminton. Susi Susanti made history as the country’s first individual Olympic champion.

At the most recent Olympics in Tokyo, Indonesia won five medals, including a gold in women’s doubles badminton. This victory made Indonesia only the second country, after China, to win gold in all badminton events at the Olympics.

For Paris 2024, Indonesia will compete in 12 different sports. Badminton remains their strongest hope, with nine athletes competing. The country will also make its debut in artistic gymnastics and is sending four sport climbers for the first time. After a long absence, the women’s archery team is returning to the Olympics.

Indonesia’s sports officials are aiming high, targeting a top 30 finish in the medal table. They’re hoping for gold medals not just in badminton, but also in weightlifting, archery, surfing and sport climbing. If they win multiple golds, it would be a first since 1992 Games.
