In a stunning display of dedication to his sport, Australian hockey player Matt Dawson has undergone a partial finger amputation to ensure his participation in the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024.
Dawson, 30, a key defender in Australia’s silver medal-winning team at the Tokyo Olympics, recently faced a critical decision after breaking the ring finger on his right hand. The injury threatened his chances of competing in what would be his third Olympic Games.
Presented with two options by his medical team – either allow the finger to heal naturally in a cast or have the top portion amputated – Dawson chose the latter. The decision was made to guarantee his readiness for the Paris Games and consider his long-term well-being.
“I made an informed decision with the plastic surgeon at the time not only for the opportunity to play in Paris but for life after as well,” Dawson told Australia’s Channel Seven as he departed for France. “The best option was for me to take the top of my finger off. It’s a bit of a change at the moment and an exciting challenge, I guess.”

Australian coach Colin Batch expressed amazement at Dawson’s commitment. “It’s not something a coach can decide for a player,” Batch said. “Full marks to Matt. Obviously he’s really committed to playing in Paris. I’m not sure I would have done it, but he’s done it, so great.”
The surgery was performed this week, leaving Dawson with a shortened ring finger on his right hand. Despite the drastic measure, the player appears optimistic about adapting to the change and competing at the highest level.
Australia’s hockey team, who narrowly lost to Belgium in a penalty shootout during the Tokyo final, is set to face 2016 Olympics champions Argentina in their opening match in Paris on July 27.
Dawson’s extreme sacrifice highlights the intense dedication and personal costs often associated with Olympic-level competition. As the Games approach, all eyes will be on the Australian team to see how this bold decision impacts their performance on the world stage.
